One time in my life, and very weird thing happened. I've posted it before, but I never got an answer to what exactly the definition of what happened to me was - hopefully now I'll get one.

I was at my cousin's house, and I was sleeping in his room. His room is so pitch black, you cannot see anything at all, not even your own hand inches away from your face. I was sleep deprived before I went to sleep (was up about 60 straight hours or so). Anyway, the only dream-like state I can recall from that night was when I was actually really awake. This was my only recall of the night. This is what happened...

I woke up, but I guess the extremely dis-orienting blackness and no visual aids caused my brain to not realize I had waken up. I've never slept in an environment so pitch black. I didn't know what time it was, but it was still dark. I got up, completely in a non-lucid dream state. I almost fell off the bed (I didn't know I was on the bed to begin with). I did however see the faintest light coming from around the cracks of where his door was located. Immediatly I got the idea that I was inside of some kind of metal chamber, that was closed off. And then I started to hallucinate! (or dream while awake) I could all of a sudden see through the cracks of faint light (which all of a sudden was bright yellow instead of light blue like it was initially), and I saw 3 of my friends on the other side. They talked briefly, and then turned away from me and started walking away. I panicked, thinking they forgot about me and that I was going to be trapped in this metal chamber forever. My heart started beating really fast, and I stumbled toward the light, and while doing this, I must have stepped on my cousins leg or something who laying on the floor. He called out my name, and when I heard him, I realized I was awake and realized where I truly was. I breathed a HUGE sigh of relief. I was still super tired, went back to bed, and committed all this to memory before I passed out again.

Now, this wasn't a flase awakening because that only happens in dreams when you think you are awake. This is like the exact the opposite. I woke up, thinking I was dreaming (or atleast in a dream-state) while I was really awake. Sleep-walkers don't ever remember their experiences, so it wasn't that.

All I know is sleep deprivation + pitch blackness + dead quite eqauled me waking up in a dream state.

I don't think this was in anyway dangerous. Like I said, once my auditory sense was given something familiar, it brought me to waking conciousness. Oddly, the physical sensations, did not seem right. It felt very dream-like, like I felt the bed, the floor, but it felt like I was mildly buzzed, but the moment I came back to waking conciousness I felt normal. Had my cousin not called out my name, I would have began to bang on the door, yelling, and waking up the entire house. Had I actually opened the door and continued I would have seen the hallway, stairs, and been brought back to waking conciousness by the familiar environment (atleast I think I would have if my cousin's familiar voice did). Hopefully I would have atleast, my hallucinations were beginning to get pretty intense there.

I heard a really interesting show on the radio once about people who are sleep deprived and the way their brains compensate for it. I seem to remember that hallucinations and weird experiences like yours are pretty common for the sleep deprived. You have to be REALLY sleep deprived, like you were. Not sleeping for 24 hours won't do it.

I haven't experienced anything like you have, but I have had dreams so incredibly vivid that I woke up not knowing where I was, who that guy was in bed with me (husband), and all around confused because I thought the dream I was just having had been real. That was scary.

These people don't go to sleep though. They stay awake for x amount of time then hallucinate. I didn't hallucinate while I was awake, plus I already had some sleep before this happened. I was already through deep sleep and apparantly into my REM cycles. Maybe the two got mixed in?

Edit: And these people generally still know they are awake, or else they wouldn't stay awake. I had no idea, I was in a completely non-lucid dream state.
