I do not know why SP's are like that. I'm sure there have been good ones, its just that I think the idea of being unable to move and losing the control you once had over your body scares them. The fear probably causes the mind to see images associated with fear.
If people weren't afraid of having an SP, I don't think it would be as scary. I mean, I was scared when I had mines, and you were scared of seeing those images.

My SP/Nightmare?
I was lying there on my bed, motionless, facing a clock across the room. I cannot move, I am held against my will against something invisible to me. As hard as I try to move my arms, my attempts are futile against the greater power against me.
I look at the clock, and it begins developing into something monsterous. It begins to have something grow out from it. I can't quite explain what it was too well, but it held similar properties to water. It seemed free-flowing, but held a consistent shape and form. It began spiraling counter-clockwise. It resembled something of a black hole, but only with water.
Slowly, it began to almost suck me in. Inch by agonizing inch. But the strange part was, I wasn't moving at all. I felt as if I was being stretched out. Like having my insides pulled towards the vortex. It was a bad feeling, something I don't want to experiance again.
I kept trying to move my arms and legs harder, and more desperately now, as the feeling grew more intense. I see strange, unclear objects/things/people around me. They/it is very unclear and dark, but appeared to be of the same material as the vortex. A water form creature, that was very small. (About 1-2 feet tall), and there were many of them around the base of my bed.
I began to think in my nightmare that if I moved, I would be totally consumed in the vortex. I tried calling out for help. A cry for aide. Twice I tried it, but no sound escaped my mouth. No utter of attempt, nothing. Just the deafening silence of my insides being pulled.
It may have been a dream though, but I just feel asleep, and awoke to being drenched with sweat.
