Sleep paralysis is always something that plagued my childhood. I'd get it all the time and I'd honestly freak out. It was some of the scariest moments of my life. Everything about it was scary for me.

The first time it ever happened I was 9 or 10 years old. I was staying at my grandmothers house and it was a full house, the only place for me to sleep was outside in her porch... which was much different from the city in that it was pitch black, so many stars I could see. But I wasn't scared, I had my dog right by my side, an Irish Wolfhound... huge dog.

Anyway, the SP hit me and I was freaking out. I couldn't breathe, I couldn't move, and I was hearing some really scary sounds. It felt as if a huge hand was squeezing me... then all of a sudden it let go, in an instant I was free. I opened my eyes and just gasped for air. I looked out into the woods, everything was illuminated from the full moon(just a coincidence). Well, in the woods, thru the trees I saw a bright light. Then, out in my grandmothers back yard... I saw a shadow beast.

If you are familiar with shadow people then you know what I saw. My interest moved from the light I saw(which later turned out to be the moon) and onto this shadow creature, that stood in the center of my grandmothers backyard, which was about a half acre surrounded by thick woods on one side and a street on the other. IT wasn't human, I don't know what it was. One thing I can tell you is that it was ALL black and I couldn't discern any distinguisable features. The thing bolted into the woods and ascended...

I flipped out, ran into the house, it was 5:00AM and my dog was out on the porch looking at me. I turned on HBO and waited for everyone to wake up. I was really scared.

Anyway, after this even it happened to me many more times... too many to count. Except when I'd get ouf of the sleep paralysis I wouldn't open my eyes, I'd keep them shut tight. Some times I'd lay on my bed for hours until the sun came up, and I would only know the sun was out because the blackness when you close your eyes turns sort of red...

Well yeah, then in 2004 I was reading the paranormal board on a website called Gamefaqs. I was very into cryptozoology, I saw a 150+ post topic on lucid dreams... and well the rest is history. My next experience with SP turned into a dream, not lucid, but a dream. On my chest, instead of the hag, was my father crying, he thought Iwas dead. It was very cool.

Also, because of my chronic SP I was able to WILD quite easily. I do mean easily, I was able to effectivly induce dreams via the WILD method with amazing success rates. It's actually the only way I can lucid dream to be honest.

Well yeah, that's my story, post yours if you have any.

i remember my first encounter with SP quite vividly.

i was 17 at the time. I was visiting my mom, and obviously i was sleeping. Also one of the few times in my life where i had a nightmare. In my dream i was in some type of cabin for some reason, with a few family members and friends and probably some unknown dream charcters as well. When all of a sudden one side of the wall got ripped open and there was a HUGE amount of wind. Then i saw what announced itself as a demon (later i got on the internet and actually found a picture of a demon that was identical to the one in my dream ) But this demon was basicly a cloud with a face and it was blowing that HUGE amount wind from it's mouth.

So any way the demon was telling all kinds of wierd stuff: there is no god, i'm going to get your soul, and kill your mom (you know, typical demon stuff)

so at some point in the dream i got so scared that it woke me up. SP kicked in and i was stuck in panic mode from the nightmare. i was sleeping on the couch and my mom was sleeping on the other couch behind me. Basicly it was horrible experience, i couldn't shake the fear from the nightmare off and i was stuck not being able to move. which after a dream with a demon in it was even worse. it felt like i was being held down by something, which was even freakier..i thought some exorsist $*** was going down.

The S.P. probably lasted, oh.... about 7 or 8 minutes. which is a long damn time after what i had gone through. Right before it wore off i heard a banging at my front door, even scarier after the first S.P. of my life, when you don't know wtf is going on. turns out it was just one of my friends but still.. i pooped my pants.

well i just tried to find the picture agian, but no luck. well that's my story

yeah, with everyone I talk to like 90% of the people who have SP for the first time are sleeping somewhere other then their usual bed.

Cool story, I look forward to hearing others, even if they are anti climatic.

I love the vibrations. They are like painless jolts of electricity that flow through my body... the feeling is so soothing for me.

You don't understand what I'd give to have a nightmare again... I haven't had any since I was a young child.

I have a recurring dream where I'm lucid but I'm like 3000 feet underwater and I can't do anything... like, I can soar thru the water like im flying but I go slower, and i can swim... but there is jsut nothing, its just me in a liquid abyss. It's not scary though... just very depressing... to be lucid but all by yourself.

The first time I experienced SP (I was about 6 at the time) I felt as if my skin had been sucked into my bones, and I was a living skeleton. I thought that if I opened my eyes, all I would see would be bones.

What was even freakier was that when I had had my eyes open right before this, I saw a shadow of a hand on my pillow. Both of my hands were under the pillow, so there wouldn't have been a shadow.

I haven't had any presence but myself during the sleep paralysises I have experienced. It still is uncomfortable as hell; so annoying being unable to move or breathe properly.

I've only had a "presence" if that's what its called twice. Once in the story I opened the topic with.

The other was... *looks in journal* eight months ago.

I was just normally sleeping and I awoke to SP. I just let it pass and I opened my eyes to get up for some water. On my chest was a ghastly creature that scared the SHIT out of me. I wasn't even expecting it or thinking about the hag or anything. It was like an oversized gremlin... a little bigger then a basketball and its face looked like Gollum, haha. I was so freaked out. I closed my eyes and went back to sleep.

It's not always an old hag on your chest, can be anything... usually what frightens you the most.

For many years I had "nightmares" where I was paralyzed in my bed, feeling a very evil presence behind me, and hearing growls coming from 10cm from my ear... VERY unpleasant feelings ! But usually short (objectively it must have been 5 seconds or so, even if it felt very long...).

Only 2 years ago, I learnt that it was in fact "sleep paralysis" and not a usual nightmare. Since then, I almost never got any.

Reading your posts, and the forum where I discovered the concept of sleep paralysis, I'm happy that mine were short (for some people it was as long as 30 minutes...) and didn't involve visual hallucinations...
Dec. 2006 - July 2007:
92 DILDs + 30 WILDs ; 75% too short, 24% decent, ~3 of 2 to 5 minutes
(I stopped counting after that)

jeebus i wish i had seen this post before i posted my own. oh well, heres what my post says:

So i didnt get much sleep last night, fell asleep for a little more than an hour. I came awake suddenly, not able to move any part of my body, save my eyes. I couldnt see more than a few feet around me, like i was in a long tunnel. For some reason the sound of the ceiling fan was deafeningly loud in my ears. I was aware of a sort of dark presence to my right, not so much a figure as it is was a blackish cloud, like a fuzzy shadow. At this point i was more terrified than i have ever been in my life. I struggled SO hard to move, but i couldnt. The black cloud seemed to sort of sway and grow larger, at which point i closed my eyes again and attempted to scream bloody murder. With startling quickness, i felt intense tingling in my fingers and toes. The jet engine sound that the fan was making subsided slowly, and i could sense some feeling coming back into my limbs. I struggled to get up, but it was like having sandbags attached to my entire body. i finally came to my feet and could feel the real world around me. i had to check all corners of my room to ensure there was no blackness hovering around.
Ive heard of sleep paralysis before, but the experience startled me so much i cant look at my bed without worry. was this a normal, incident, to experience? i didnt feel like i was dreaming, but the terror in that time was like something out of a deeply maddening nightmare. what the hell happened to me?

this is the first time this has happened to me, im 22. seems like this mostly happens to people when theyre younger, which is weird...
