I went to sleep last night after having gotten something like four or five hours of sleep (my norm is at least eight hours), and I noticed that my dreams seemed more nonsensical, emotional, and fragmented than usual. It jumped from scene to scene, and when I went to write it down, the chronological order was hard to place. The entire dream seemed to be made up of components from TV shows and movies as well.

My question is this: has anybody ever had this happen? Does anybody know of any actual research done on the effect of sleep deprivation on dreams?

I've carefully tracked the effects of fatigue, both physical and mental, on both my dream recall and LDing. In my case, the more tired I am, in either or both regards, the worse my recall is and the lower my chances of lucidity become.

This doesn't directly answer your inquiry, but that's my experience after over a year of keeping track.

That's okay, I just wondered if there was anybody else who'd noticed that fatigue had an effect on dreams. Thanks.

Yes 100%, if i get even 7 hours of sleep my recall is down the drain.

      8 hours is perfect.

I've found that my dream patterns vary, when I am exhausted. Usually, I just pass out if I'm tired, but sometimes, I will have a random LD...So, I'm really not sure if there is a large correlation between fatigue level and dreams for me.

You're not alone, it's happened to me too. Though, the fragments that they occur in are right but it's random, like I'll be dreaming about say a trip to somewhere and it randomly is something totally unrelated then something related back to the trip, I guess that's why it's hard to find the actual order, the fragmented order seems right. These kind of dreams I rarely become lucid and usually happen after a stressful or tiring day, my dream recall does go down too, even on a night with 10 hours of sleep it'll be that way if I was tired during the day...
