I think everyone has their own theories.
Eastern religions contend that when we sleep, out spirit or astral body exits our physical body and ventures out (into many possible dimensions, I believe). It is still linked to the physical body though (by a kind of energy umbilical cord), and I am sure there is a sort of communication between our spirit and physical brain while this happens.
The experiences of our spirit In these different dimensions are remembered as dreams, although the physical brain can't process some things (like 5dimensional expereinces), (5 dimensional means there is no time), so those memories get "converted" or watered down.
Deja vu is when you had a dream which you DON'T remember, because it is still in a 5th dimensional format. (Your probably got awoken by an alarm, or your sleep was distubed in some way) are going through your day, and you remember this dream or just a tiny part of it (usually because of something you saw). The weird de ja vu experience is simply the physical brain struggling with a memory belonging to the spiritual self, which is not 4th dimensional.
Here is the wikipedia article on deja vu, including scientific theories, and it also has a section on dreams

Now, an OBE in the waking plane of existence, your back yard.. is an OBE. But an OBE that occurs in a totally different dimension, or plane, is a dream.
There are something like 25 dimensions according to modern physics.
I also view dreams as communication from our subconscious/ spirit.
About the faces, I doubt it. In my dreams, people have no faces... or they have faces, but if I know them in real life, I always recognize them without looking at their face-- usually I "know" who it is, but I also dream about imaginary poeple often. I don't pay attention to faces in dreams.
