      A Path Through Dream World

Okay so this is something I've been wondering about for a while.

When I think about my dreams (when fully awake), I can often mentally 'walk' from one dream to another. The dreams may be entirely unrelated as far as when I had them, what the 'plot' of the dream was, or what occurred during the waking time around the dreams. Simply, if I start recalling one dream, I can step into the next one, and the next after that based on the surrounding scenery or on some kind of underlying thread I cannot yet understand. It's fascinating to me because I can literally walk through my dreaming history, going back for years, and on occasion, I recall dreams I had entirely forgotten based on these apparent connections between dreams.

So my question is, does anyone else experience this kind of interconnectedness with their dreams? Do you know of any reason why dreams are organized in the mind in this way (if indeed I am not the only person who does this)?

      Thanks!

Sounds like regular old retrieval cues to me.

Thanks for the reply, though I'm not sure what you mean by that.

The brain doesn't store memories like spots on a tape. It's more like a complex network of relationships between individual neurons. These relationships are entirely physical, and thus do not necessarily require contextual meaning.

So, for example, you may have a particular neuron that represents the colour red (actually, it represents red because of the neurons linked to it, but that just complicates this even more). Now, if you hear the word 'apple', you might immediately think 'red', among other things, because many apples are red. So in this case the link makes sense and is thus, in some sense, "visible" to your conscious mind. Now suppose every apple you've ever seen in your life was sitting on a plate. If you hear the word 'apple', you will now also think 'plate', even though the connection isn't obvious to your conscious mind. Only through introspection later on will you realize why apples get associated with plates.

So the point is, connections can be formed between ideas or thoughts that don't necessarily make logical sense, because that's how the brain works.

Yes I am familiar with that cognitive model. But I guess what I'm wondering is if anyone else uses this method of imagery/memory to revisit and recall old dreams.

I do believe that there is a connection and a very strong connection.

When dreaming obviously everyday realities dont apply, that goes the same with reason. You cant justify what is in a dream, only interpret what knowledge you know about the dreaming world. In dreaming, our assemblage point shifts to our left hand side of our shoulder blades, creating a slightly different preception and awarness, compared to when it is on our right side is when we have normal awarness.

When we dream or do anything in life our assemblage point makes shifts and movments depending on our view of what we precive. I believe in this dream you were actully focusing on either the position of the assemblage point without conciously knowing it, or went into a normal dream state and focused your intent on a dream object which created another dream.

      Hope this helped you.

Yup, I get those, pretty often actually. It only takes one link from one dream to another for me.
