't you hate when you have a really good dream...

...and it fades before you can even reach for your dream journal, let alone write it down?

Seriously, it's happened more than usual to me lately, and today (or possibly yesterday) I remembered two great dreams, lost the second while I was collecting my thoughts on the first, then lost the first while I tried to remember the secon while pulling up a document I keep minimized on my laptop for dreams and notes to self (admittedly, I should have typed out the first before focusing on trying to keep hold of the generalities of the second, but still).

      Infuriating, isn't it?

It happened to me this morning. I had a great dream but when I woke up I couldn't find my journal. :O

You should try using a key word or key image memorization technique. Basically, you latch on to a few key words describing the dream or remember some images that best describe the dream. Then later on you need only remember the words or images and you'll easily be able to fill in the rest.

It happens to me all the time. I can only remember certain parts of my dreams.

Happens to me all the time, but normally I do remember to write it down, but it comes out as mindless jib-jab.

Even worse is when you have a neat dream, and end up writing it down in your journal during a false awakening. My written DJ has more than a few entries that say "Dreamed that I was writing a dream in my journal."

I would never say that I hate them. I just dislike the ones where I write in my DJ and then wake up for real.

There is a reason for that and if you would like to explore the technique of "sleep programming"
to get the answer as to why this happens... try the following:

Say this OUT LOUD before you go to sleep:

"I WISH TO KNOW THE TRUTH: WHY ARE MY DREAMS VANISHING BEFORE I CAN WRITE IT DOWN?"

Then go to sleep. The sentence you said will trigger a dream that will explain to you The Truth.

Listen to that dream, then you can do something within the dream to stop it from happening...

      Sweet dreams

It happened to me a few days ago D: I couldn't find my journal. Turned out my new dog had moved it to another room after I knocked it on the floor.

      Ugh.

Today just the opposite happened, I had a friggan AMAZINGLY good dream, possibly the best I've ever had, even better than a few of my Lucids, and I remembered every part.

The easiest(and best, I've found) thing to do is to just focus on the most vivid part, or a part that means the most to you, which part has the most significance, and just focus on that one part, and when you have it down in your mind, write it down or keep it in the back of your mind and focus on another. If you try and remember the whole dream at once it'll fade away, but if you can hold on to one or a couple parts, then those can tie in to the other parts later.

This is what I did with today's dream, and it worked perfectly

Or you forget you never woke up and want to read that dream but it isn't there and you think you have gone completely insane, "I know I wrote it down, WTF."

      It's all just to confusing,

Agreed, i usually just get a page and fill it with key words, then go back to sleep and write the story that day.

Considering I now write down my dreams almost exclusively on the computer, my chance of forgetting the dream before writing it down is even more elevated. Especially because my damn computer takes forever to boot up.

I find it easier to type dreams out, so I don't need to erase or asnnotate, I can just type in what I remember. Still, Lezen's right, it does take a while to start it up even when a computer is in sleep mode with the dream journal on screen.

I started using a mini digital voice recorder that way I don't have to open my eyes to type or write.

Its even better if you fall back to sleep with out turning off the voice recorder and record things you say while sleeping. I guess I would lose it if it was not my voice on there. You never know. It really helps and to me it seems I get more detail than trying to write or type and recall it at the same time.

I write down keywords if I don't have time to make full notes. Sometimes I write out dreams over breakfast, or even over the course of the day when I have spare moments.

Problem is, money is non-existent at the moment. And in a few days, I won't have a pen left to write with.

If you expect to be awake, since you just woke up, why would an RC not prove you're awake? Anyway, I don't know about Scarhand, but by the time I've finished an RC, I've usually started forgetting extensive portions of the dream.
