I'm an English Major in college and I have always been writing papers, but now i'm taking a creative writing class in which i have to write fiction.

We're supposed to be working on a large story or book and i didn't know what else to write upon, so i chose the life of dreaming.

Keep in mind this is a first draft of my story, very rough...and i need some ideas and feedback!

Hope everyone is doing well.

This story is a little fragmented and i'm not sure where its going, but i like the ideas, and i think i can really make something of it:

Molly opened her door and as she expected Tom was staring right at her – on time as always - they shared a silent moment and a smile before they embraced – you see, they have been separated for some time, of which I hope to explain later. He stepped inside her house and placed his keys, wallet, cellphone, sunglasses, iPod – all the accessories of our generation, on the table by the door. Feeling a bit less weighted down, he asked her slowly, “So…?” She replied, “So…what?” he pulled a fairly large dubie out of his pocket and turned his eyes from the joint to her eyes a few times inquisitively. She suppressed a quaint laugh and said, “hell yeah! After all we’ve been through its time to chill.” He lit it up promptly and passed it to her. She took a hit and turned her eyes from the blazing end of the joint to his eyes – and he knew what this meant. Tom bent down a few inches to get to Molly’s level, and their mouths met – exchanging more than just smoke. As the smoke crept into Tom’s lungs with an inhale his eyes snapped open and he sat up in his bed coughing violently as a smoky haze filled his room. “What in the world,” he said between spasms of coughs. This was nothing he wasn’t used to – his dreams had been becoming more vivid in the last few weeks, but this was the first physical element that had transpired into waking life – smoke, for god’s sake, in his room? What the hell is happening to me? Tom wondered…Did I just get real stoned and forget coming home, or was that a dream that manifested itself here? Molly was a woman he only knew in his dreams, but she seemed so real, he didn’t want to admit it because someone might think he was crazy, but he knew Molly was real. He wasn’t sure if it was two dreams colliding, or a different world, or maybe he was just going insane. Tom rolled over in bed, grabbed his phone to check the time and saw that he had a text message. He pressed the wrong buttons almost 5 times before getting to his inbox and the message was from a number he didn’t save in his phone; the message only said, “call me – molly xo.” Staring at the phone a few long seconds before dialing her number, he wondered if he were dreaming at this moment…if molly were in his dreams then how did she call him on his phone? Weren’t the unconscious and subconscious minds separated? He called the number and reached a voice mail, which did infact belong to Molly -- before he could leave a message, he heard a voice that came from somewhere – in his mind, outside, from the walls – he could not say, except that the voice was just there. The voice quietly but strongly said, “Que te duerme con los anjelos…” A couple months ago, Tom would have freaked out - but he knew a dream from reality – until just recently where dreams started to become reality…he got up and walked to his bedroom door, picking up a fairly large hardbound book – just in case he needed something to defend himself against someone/something dangerous. His hand gripped the cool doorknob and behind the door he could here the static noise of something approaching, it almost sounded like water…he opened the door to his house and it wasn’t the normal beach he saw, from the distance he could see an extremely large wave approaching him. Tom knew the twists and changes in the dream world better than some people knew the ins and outs of traffic in their hometowns. In his last few moments he took a very deep breath and looked, for the first time, into his hand and realized the hard bound book he was holding onto was a map. He stood tall and didn’t give any ground as the tidal wave slammed into him and destroyed everything around him.
Molly sat up abruptly in bed – but didn’t scream this time. Why would she dream about Tom holding a map, standing in his doorway, wearing only his boxers – and on top of that a tidal wave exploding into him. Maybe dreams hold more importance than we realize. If Tom was in trouble, he needed her, but how could she find him…before a few months ago, she had no control over her dreams - for dreams took her places, dreams happened to her….lately, she had been able to exert some control over her dreams, but it wasn’t the same type of control one would use in waking life. Dreaming was more about energy than physicality. Before she could finish her thoughts, she saw a flicker of light from her nightstand – her cellphone. But as she reached fore it, she already knew she had a missed call, from Tom – she had gotten his number in last nights dream from the phone he left on the table by the door – after he vanished from the dream world right after they had kissed. The dream world shifts and turns in such a way that cannot be predicted, almost like a wave with a mind of its own.

Tom woke up to the sounds of someone in the kitchen, a pot banging here and there, an alarm following the smell of breakfast. He rose out of bed and walked into the kitchen, seeing Molly behind the counter, naked except an apron, Damn, Tom thought, she looks soooooo cute – when did I ever do anything to deserve her – …hearing Tom behind her, she stopped what she was doing and looked back behind her shoulder to give him a smile…he walked closer and wrapped his arms around her from behind, leaning into her and giving her a soft – goodmorning kiss before going to the bathroom to wash up before breakfast. Communication transcended words, and not a word was spoken, but for some reason it was a comfortable silence – like nothing needed to be said. When he came back out, it was ready – blueberry pancakes, more fruit than he could name, coffee, orange juice, the works - a breakfast to make any man happy. He felt slightly bad that he had woken late but when he tried to mention it, she shut him up promptly with a kiss. They both sat down and feasted, just another morning within a dream. They would both have to wake soon. The sun rose just enough during breakfast that it pierced through the windows and as Molly’s eyes caught the light, he could swear he was awake – or was he dreaming? He got up and looked out the windows, grabbing last nights bottle of wine, pulling the cork out the bottle he took a swig and looked out the window to the red – orange glow of the ocean surrounding them. In any direction he looked, he saw endless ocean…he felt like a pirate – even if this ship didn’t sail. Molly joined him in the window sill, taking the wine out of his hands to take a sip, “Nothing like some good Pino Noir with a nice pancake breakfast,” “Lets have a shower and head out for a surf, the swell looks like its starting to come in…and we have to wake soon.” Her eyes captured more sunlight at the first part of what he said and then darkened as he mentioned waking…She didn’t want to leave, but she had to – and who knows next time they would meet. She nodded, and said “ok, I’ll meet you in there…get the shower warm for me.” For some reason, Tom felt compelled to kiss her – and he did, it lasted for what seemed like hours, but here time was relative…all he knew was that it was a kiss like the one they shared before having to leave each other. “What was that for?” Molly asked breathlessly…He looked at her and smiled before saying, “I have no idea, but I have another for you when you join me in the shower.” He detached from her arms and ran to the bathroom, turning on the shower. He stepped under the flow of warm water and took the last drink of wine from the bottle, and he set the bottle down on the counter where there was a key. He picked it up and examined it in waiting for Molly to join him, what was she doing? Encrusted on the bottom part of the key was a quote that read, “La llave para el libro de sueńos.” Before he could think about the translation, he heard a scream from the bedroom, and very quickly jumped out of the shower, “MOLLY! What’s going on”, Tom yelled as he ran to the room. The door to the bedroom was closed, and he grabbed the cold doorknob and as he turned it, time seemed to slow down. As the door opened he felt a change of something – like someone would feel walking from the blistering heat into an air conditioned room – but this wasn’t a change in temperature, but a change in energy. The room was dark despite the sunlight glaring through the window looking out at the endless sea – put part of the room was missing – not destroyed –but about a 5 foot circle in diameter was just gone, a hole – sucking light, sound, smell, energy into it. Tom looked inside and felt a healthy fear but he knew that’s where Molly went – or was taken. They might have finally found us, Tom wondered. He took a deep breath, like he did before going underwater and ran towards the hole in the room. As he stepped through, everything changed.
