      Night Terrors

Hey all. My very dear friend is having troubles with night terrors. Every night she wakes up screaming without any recollection of the nightmare whatsoever. Naturally she is perpetually exhausted due to the restlessness of her sleep. She can't afford counselling and I am unable to help. Could someone help me help her?

Tell her to wake herself up if she has a nightmare, it's what I do.

She doesn't know she has the dreams. I'm going to refer her to this forum; see if she can get some control.

Please do, it would be much easier for us to hear her side of the story.

I'll do some research on this stuff and see if I can't find ways to over come it or atleast help stop them from happening.

Ask your friend to start a dream journal.

This is what helped me get rid of my Night-terrors where I thought to be blind and feeling darkness all around me. When I woke up from one I would be in blind panic trying to reach the blinds or a lightswitch to turn on some light for somehow I was still blind but already awake.

I think the NIght Terror could be caused by your friend getting stuck in what they call "The Void". A stage you have to pass through to get to the astral world when you get an OBE. Once you have entered into The Void you cant "go back" but have to complete the transition. This place is all empty and totally dark and if you do not know what it is it can be real scary. So instead of to panic one has to relax and just let it happen. After a while you can even fly through it although its all empty and totally dark. Its a very quiet place.

      -------------------
Night Terror or Nightmare?: Nightmares occur during the dream phase of sleep known as REM sleep. Most people enter the REM stage of sleep sometime after 90 minutes of sleep. The circumstances of the nightmare will frighten the sleeper, who usually will wake up with a vivid memory of a long movie-like dream.
Night terrors, on the other hand, occur during a phase of deep non-REM sleep usually within an hour after the subject goes to bed. This is also known as stage 4. (A link to a sleep stages chart can be found on the navigation bar to the left) During a night terror, which may last anywhere from five to twenty minutes, the person is still asleep, although the sleepers eyes may be open. When the subject does wake up, they usually have no recollection of the episode other than a sense of fear. This, however, is not always the case. Quite a few people interviewed can remember portions of the night terror, and some remember the whole thing.

From what my friend has described to me, I truly have the impression that they are, indeed, night terrors. Unfortunately, my friend will not be able to get onto the forum in the near future. I will, however, ask her to describe as much as she can so that I may relay it here. I will also tell her about "The Void." I would also like to thank everyone for their help.
