I'll give you some description of what my experience was and how I came to notice it in the first place.
I think it was an average day, I'm in my bedroom just perhaps thinking about what I'll be doing later in the day when I seem to have an exact dream image just pop into my head. This is no normal memory of a dream in the way that you'd recall a dream from the past either by trying to think about it or read about it from your dream journal, but a fully fledged dream object or image exactly as it was created when I first dreamed it. I'm not sure where the image was being projected to though and whether it was in my minds eye or somehow projected forwards beyond my eyes, almost like a holographic image might be, but I was totally aware that I had my full natural sight and the dream image at the same time.
I too, had the euphoria feeling when this happened, it was like, "Fantastic! I've got access to my dreams whilst still consciously aware", but that's when things got really strange. At first I'd be shown random images or object from dreams of my past, mostly recent if I remember correctly at the time, but I noticed that if I looked at a particula object in my room, say a coke can for example, then I'd imediately be whooshed off to a particular dream that had that specific object in it. Not only that, but if I proceeded to try that on other objects in the room then again, it would then instantly switch the dreamscene in my mind to correspond to that particular object that was being looked at. Totally mental experience!
I've got more to say on it of course, but want to see what your reply to this would be istayonfire just to verify that it is indeed close enough to what you experienced yourself.
One more note though. After this experience I am in no doubt, in my own mind at least, that none of my dreams have been erased from my mind, as it was showing me far more detail in past dreams ( sometimes a couple of decades back ) than some sort of simple recollection of dreams.
