To change your rhythm I think you will just have to go to bed earlier for a while until your body grows accustomed to it. On top of going to bed earlier you could take some melatonin, that always helps me sleep. Here is information on melatonin in case you don't know what it is. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melatonin

It doesn't matter how long you sleep; you only need a rhythm. Your body will accustom to however long you sleep if you keep up a rhythm, whether it's 5 hours a night or 10.

The amount of sleep a person gets is very important. The amount of sleep a person needs varies from person to person. Studies show that an average healthy sleep is between 6-8 hours. According to what you said I could sleep 2 hours a day and be perfectly healthy as long as I was consistent. This is of course not the case and a person would become very unhealthy and potentially die with so little sleep. The OP says that he has been having memory lapses and doesn't feel as sharp as he should be. Both of those are symptoms of not getting enough sleep.

Sounds like you're probably contemplating an aporia.

Also age tends shift our "thusness" around during our lives, and since people of the same age tend to group together, the changes happen in concert inside the group and is often hidden with a facade to distract from any unwanted uncertainty.

Adults are supposed to get 7-8 hours of sleep per night. Teenagers actually should get more, I think about an hour more. I wish I could remember the whole chart they showed on GMA the other day for you. Younger children need even more. EVERY night, except the occasional night out or whatever. You aren't getting anywhere near enough, really, except on weekends. You need to go to bed earlier on school nights if you have to get up at six.

And really, you know, marijuana doesn't really help anything at all, except possibly pain in cancer patients, though I know enough alternatives that I doubt I'd use that! I got dreadfully ill once from second-hand marijuana smoke, at a Love-In, at the Glide Memorial Methodist Church in San Francisco. I had to go up on the roof for air. In the sixties, when Love-Ins and marijuana were a big deal. The people got thrown out of the church and went to the beach and buried their heads, literally, in the sand. Metaphorically, that was a good lesson for me, early on. I didn't have to try marijuana after that, really, though someone fed me some seeds in stew once. A little fennel and oregano might have tasted better!

There are healthy herbs that you could use, like lavender to relax you. Someone suggested melatonin if you have a hard time getting to sleep. It's just a chemical the brain produces on it's own, but some of us insomniacs don't produce enough. Melatonin comes from cherries, so you could also drink cherry juice awhile before bedtime. These did a beautiful job regulating my sleep cycle, though it is best to go to bed and get up at the same time every day, so it might mean being more regular on weekends as well.

Seven to eight hours... every night! If you get up at six, go to bed between ten and eleven. If all your favorite shows are on at ten, use the VCR and record them... that's what I do!

It doesn't matter how long you sleep; what mostly matters is the REM. Your body can adapt to a different REM cycle. Ever heard of polyphasic sleep? It's when a person naps 20-30 minutes around 4-6 times a day. Their body eventually adapts, and they jump into their REM cycle as soon as they start napping.

If your statement was true, so many people who've tried this out would've died, too. People who've successfully adapted to sleeping like this proves that your body can adapt to a different REM cycle. Though you might not get enough REM no matter what by sleeping only 2 hours nightly, you can with 3 hours. With that said, I'm sure he is able to get a healthy 5 hours of sleep, but only as long as it's consistent.

Yes, I have heard of polyphasic sleep and what you say about is true. The only problem is that no one was talking about polyphasic sleep. Polyphasic sleep is not relevant to this thread as it does not help the OP.

It was an example to prove that
