      Weird falling sensation

I had a weird experience last night, I don't know where to post this because I'm not quite sure exactly what it was, although I think it was a side-effect of sleep paralysis.

I went to bed, and lay there daydreaming for a while, like I always do. Then I decided to stop daydreaming and try and go to sleep. I lay there for a bit longer, with a few spontaneous thoughts still going through my head, then suddenly I fell! I hit the bed and jolted awake. It's a bit hard to explain, but it almost felt like I'd fallen back into my body, and it was accompanied by strong vibrations.

I looked around my bedroom, I was convinced it was a false awakening but I did some reality checks and found that I was actually still awake. So I'd never fallen asleep at all.

Similar things have happened in the past, but this is the first time it's happened in quite some time. Normally it would just be like losing my balance or something, but this time I actually fell a meter or so from above the bed! It wasn't an unpleasant experience, I was just wondering what happened exactly.

What you've just described sounds a lot like a hypnic jerk.

They happen to everyone and occur as you're just about to fall asleep. They can be made more frequent by irregular sleep schedules or sleep deprivation. You also experience less intense ones as you're sleeping.

Yup, this was a hypnic jerk. They occur when the residual muscle tension is lost as your body relaxes for sleep. Absolutely normal, and sometimes incredibly startling.

Yes it certainly was quite startling! I haven't had a particularly irregular sleep pattern, but I did stay up quite late, perhaps I should get an early night. But like I said before, it wasn't unpleasant, in fact it was quite fun in a strange way!
