      Don't you find this odd?

When you are dreaming and you are having a nightmare like your mom dies or something and you wake up because you are extremely sad or desperate you actually still think your mom is dead for like 1 minute even after you waken up and you still have to realize it was just a dream. Why does this happen? When you are awake you actually have to check to see if something happened or w.e?

I've done that. My mind usually catches up to itself after that minute, putting together a real life timeline and assuring me that the events of the dream were unlikely.

Not that I wouldn't check on everyone at the first available opportunity, mind.

I pick up a half-eaten copy of a book by Neil Gaiman, and decide this is all his fault.

I don't experience this, only 2 times i dreamt that i turned on my pc at night and send messages over msn to people.
When i wake up, or even when I am still dreaming, i try to figure out if I really did this or not.
It's not really a nightmare but it is kinda unpleasant.
This only started since I discovered about lucid dreaming so i think it might be because of the alarms i set at night, or the wbtb moments.

I've experienced this a couple of times. I've also had times where I had a particularly strong emotion in a dream right before I woke up and it was difficult to dispel that emotion for some time. Part of it is that because we are asleep, we're just within our own minds and not receiving external stimuli. When we're awake, there are things that capture our attention and can alter our emotions, but when we're sleeping we feel those emotions more intensely, making whatever's happening feel more real.

That's just how I feel about the matter.l

From what I know, it's simply because when you're sleeping, the logical part of your brain is resting. When you suddenly wake up, this logical part might take time to catch up, and that's why something that couldn't have happened might still be plausible to you. This logical part shutting down during your sleep is also, I believe, the reason why you often can't notice that all those strange things happening could only happen in dreams.

I sometimes wake up in the middle of the night, after a dream, telling myself "wow, that dream had a really cool story," but when I'll eventually wake up for good, later during the day, I'd notice the dream just didn't make sense, and I end up disappointed; the logical part of my brain just didn't notice that the story was full of discrepancies, and I had to fully awaken to become aware of these incoherences.

I have often dreamt that something had happened to my children, feeling so sad and then so relieved after having been to their rooms in the middle of the night checking whether they were okay.
Perhaps we are just too afraid of losing the people that we love.

This has happened to me about 3 times. The first time, I dreamed that my dogs had died under a colapsing cave. I ran through, saw them and just grabbed them. They gave me a WTF? look but I was just so relieved

I watched The Duchess once, and it was quite late at night. I dreamed about it and when I woke up I wasn't thinking straight. I went to the toilet and I remember thinking "I better get back through, my husband will be expecting me..." (I'm still at school haha so I'm not married) This mind state lasted the rest of the night haha, It was wierd and quite funny to think about the next day...
