      Has anyone else met Death?

Ok, take someone's hand, because I'm about to tell you about my scariest dream ever. I had it about a year and a half ago.

It started with a false awakening from a nightmare where my body was covered with bursting raspberryshaped blisters. Anyhow, I woke up from the dream(or so I thought) and sat up in bed. I looked at my watch (a digital clockradio with red digits) and it was 6 something in the morning. Then I looked the other way, out my window, and saw nothing special, just a typical dark, snowy, swedish winter morning. But when I moved my gaze a bit further to the right i saw a terrible stormcloud gathering. I looked even more to the right, and now I got the shock of my life.

There he stood, Death. He was nearly ten foot tall, wore robes with a hood and held a huge scythe. Of course instead of a face, he had a skull, and it looked like he was made out of glowing white mist. He looked straight at me and let out a terrible hollow laugh. I got so frightened that it nearly hurt in my chest and belly, and I quickly threw myself back in my bed. Then a very bright light shone through my window, and I thought, "So this is what dying is like..."

But I didn't want to die, so I tried to move or scream, but I couldn't. Then I must have thought that I might be dreaming, because I tried to wake myself up by lifting my hand to my bedlight switch to turn it on. My arm felt really heavy but i finally felt the switch between my fingers. I pressed, and thought the light would wake me up, but nothing happened. I tried a few times more, still nothing. Then I suddenly woke up, for real this time. My hand was still clinging to the lightswitch, and i tried turning it on again, and i turned out the lamp was working, it was just a bit (don't know the word in english, you have to move it around a bit to make it work )

After I had woken up, I laughed, because it was such a great experience, i've never been so frightened in my whole life. I couldn't wait to tell everyone. I stayed home that day though, just in case... What was speial about the dream was how realistic it felt, by far more realistic than all my other dreams so far, even my one and only LD since I joined dreamviews.

Now I've would like to know if anyone else have met Death in your dreams. If you have, please tell me about it, would like to know how he looked like etc. in your dreams.

He looked kind of like this:

I saw him shortly after someone shot me in the chest with a shotgun. I wasn't scared though, just kind of mad that someone shot me for no reason.

I have not met death himself, but I have died in my dream and just faded away. Never woke up from that dream. I just went on to the next one.

It's strange, yesterday I did meet 'death' in my dream.

Except. It wasn't scary. I've evidently been reading too much Pratchett and Gaiman - he had the character of Pratchett's Death and looked somewhere between that and Gaiman's Morpheus. He wasn't at all frightening, he was actually very sweet and very endearingly wanted to be liked.

Family Guy reference! I've met death before in an LD, he was trying to drag me to the spirit world, but I beat him. Eventually, he understood that I was trying to help him (long story.) So, he let me off the hook.

Interesting, in my dream, it was also a very misty morning. Wierd coincidence. My Death though, was even made out of mist, or so it seemed.

One time I got hit by a train in my dream. It was the scariest thing I've ever experienced. Just knowing, being absolutely 100% sure of the fact that my life was going to finish in a few seconds is a strong feeling. I remember the impact, and then waking up.

Never meet death, but I had a really scary dream where I thought I was going to die before. I wasn't lucid though. I got struck by lightning like 10 times then everyone around me started getting killed.

So much for my theory that if you die in a dream you die in real life...

Wow, that dream (the one in the beginning of the topic) sounded awesome. I've never met the grim reaper/death/whatever in any of my dreams. In nightmares I usually just get, like, a bad feeling, but I never see the dude himself.

Oh don't get me started on that "if you die in a dream" bullcrap. I've died in lots of dreams, lucid and not. I even killed myself in a lucid dream once b/c I wanted to know what it would feel like to jump off a building. Heh it was pretty freakin sweet until I hit the ground.

Well, I dunno. I saw the Matrix, it freaked me out, and therefore I've never tried dying in any of my dreams so yeah. I wouldn't know.

      Death

      Actually I have.
I am a person who believes in signs. Signs like a butterfly landing on your hand, a raindrop falling on your nose on a sunny day, a picture falling down... so on. I know this doesn't mean much to anybody, but for me it does and I know they mean something.

This is something I experienced when I went to my grandparents when I was a little child. I slept in a room on the other side of a hallway where my grandparents slept. I had the door slightly opened, but I could see the hallway. My grandpa had bad health. He had a heart attack earlier the year I was there.

One night I woke up freezing, still it was in the middle of the summer so I found this a bit strange. I wrapped my self in the duvet and looked out on the hallway. Then I see this dark tall figure walking by the door, I could see his head. It was a skull it looked at me, I remember I wasn't scared and I stood up and walked to the door to see who it really was. I cannot figure out why I walked out, nomatter how hard I try to find out. Normally one would be scared like hell.
I opened the door and saw the back of this figure, it was walking down the hallway and disappeared. I went back to sleep and woke up thinking it was just a dream.

It's been so long since that happened so I cant say for sure if it was a dream or not. However, I am sure my grandpa was going to die that night. But death saw me, and turned away. I think I saved grandpa that night.

To all of the doubters that read that. I might be new here, but this is not any sort of lie or joke. I can tell you how to read signs and you'll see yourself how much they can mean to you. I think I saw death, and he had a skull instead of a head. Think for yourself.... how many haven't pictured death like this... a dark figure with a skull. It IS a sign.

      Dear GinNtonic

You should have let him kill you.

One of the most important realizations we can have in our Dreaming is that we cannot die... or at least not die for very long.

I encountered Death, but my Vision was more influenced by Hollywood than by Apocalyptic Ancient Literatures. Death came like the Mirrored-Sunglassed Guard from the Movie "Cool Hand Luke", complete with his hunting rifle. I was fleeing him but my feet could hardly move. I was running with my friends, but I decided it was futile and stopped and they all ran ahead. I turned around and asked, "Are you going to kill me". "Yes", was his ready answer. So I closed my eyes and turned around. BLAM! and the bullet sent me flying forward onto my face flat on the ground. I knew I was dead. He walked up and kicked my dead body and he quite seemed to agree. I was dead.

I layed there for a minute or two, and decided to get up and find a wash room, maybe at a near by Petrol Station, to see what I looked like, being dead. I found a mirror and opened my mouth and could see light out through the hole in the back of my head. "I'm dead alright, I said to myself", and that is when the paradox hit me. I can't really die in a dream.

The dreams repeated over the next few nights killing me in ever more elaborate ways, but I never permanently died. Since then I have had a significant increase of courage in my dreams. It is quite reassuring to know that you can come to know permanent harm, no matter what.

Well, Leo, I didn't really want to let him kill me, since I wasn't lucid. Well, in the end I realized that it might be a dream, but I was so terrified that I just wanted to wake up. But I do die pretty often in my dreams. Usually I see my dead body afterwards from a third person view. I have never died in a LD though, since I'm not a frequent lucid dreamer. But I'm working on it. Your image of the Grim Reaper was interesting, I have to see that movie.

Leo, I felt like I was right there with you reading this dream... running from the guard from Cool Hand Luke, being shot and then seeing the light out of the hole
in the back of your head! *shudder*

I wonder why the killing dream repeated over the next few nights? Was it to build up your confidence that you cannot be harmed in your dreams?

The death I met in my dream was about ten feet tall with black-grey skin(not like an african, but still very black) he had either horns or really big pointy ears, a mouth with hideous teeth, and wings. He was the most terrifying thing I'd ever seen before and he started killing my family, then he went after me and I woke up. He looked something like the devil mountain in fantasia. For like a week after that I felt he was following me around everywhere and always stayed just out of sight. It was pretty freaky.

I have had some fairly pleasant experiences with death.

For instance, there was a time (apprx. 5th grade?) when I was on a street, and all these cars were speeding down the street, barely missing me. I was lucid, as usual, and tried (unsuccessfully) to change the situation. So, instead, I decided to jump in front of the cars. In part this was to challenge the stubbornness of my own brain (not changing when I told it to), and in part out of the innate curiosity I have always had for death. It didn't work for a long time, but finally I jumped in front of a (rather smaller than realistic) semi truck, and it hit me. It was one of the most fascinating experiences of my entire life. I could feel my body jerk to a stop and fall backwards, but at the same time my consciousness moved forwards. It was like an out-of-body experience. I could see the inside of the truck and everything. I was sort of slow and heavy, like a thick fog rolled over by the south wind. That was the end of the dream -- I woke up at that point.

A more recent experience is with a sort of saint/angel-figure in my dream who has influenced me greatly. His name was (and I remember during recall suddenly realizing that the name SHOULD have been morbid even though it wasn't at the time) the Early Man of Impeding Death. He looked rather like a Mayan god (i.e., the god of people who die at a young age), with a historically accurate (which I didn't know at the time, but realized later) Mayan headdress of scarlet and quetzal feathers. He had the aspect of a youth instead of an old man, as Death is usually depicted. He did not DO anything in particalar -- rather he simply WAS, and I was there to learn from his example. He was a remarkably comforting presence, which may seem to contadict the modern view of death, however, I have always been fairly comfortable with the idea of dying. In fact, I do not expect to live to be older than eighteen. Reguardless of whether or not this is accurate, I think it important to note that Death is not always an evil. Aweful perhaps (in the original sense of the word: awe+full), but not terrible. This Being was the most good and calm spirit I have felt before, and it left me with a feeling of peace that remained for more than a week. I tell you, if anyone had said, "Okay, now it's time for you to die," I would have been ready to leave.

I hope my experience proves useful to others.

      ~*Aethereal_Pellucidity*~
It is important that we do not judge these few unbiased moments of our lives, but take them as they are. There is no nightmare for the lucid dreamer, nor no shadows on the mind.
