Having lucid dreaming shoved down the public's throat in movies and media just for a quick novelty fix would certainly be vexing. For one, after the whole public hype ("Wow, yeah, you can do this thing with your dreams!") fades, LDing would be seen and mocked as if it were a fad.
As a general rule, the majority of the public only become informed through powerful, money-motivated endeavours; be it the media, entertainment industry (same thing these days) or something governmental. Money corrupts. Soon you'd have technology providing a quick-fix (which we already have, and the morals of that are debatable). Personally I'd prefer not to see an entire industry made off of LDing.
