I don't want Lucid Dreaming to be popular

Since the Inception cat's already out of the bag in this thread, let me share my catalyst for coming to this board.

I had heard of lucid dreaming before. I had done some completely unstructured practice on my own (in the terminology people have adopted here, I got a good grasp on one of my dream signs and shoved around a couple things for self preservation), but never got heavily into it. I'd talked with some people about trying to share a dream, but no one was open to the idea and I didn't know how the hell to try it anyway.

When inception came out, it gave me a reason to discuss lucid dreaming with people again. Leo specifically talks in some of his interviews about how he got into lucid dreaming while filming Inception and how he used it to manage the nightmares he's dealt with most of his life. I don't think any of the stuff in Inception generally applies to lucid dreaming, although I have included a physical object in my RCs, and I'm trying not to ask any useless fangirl questions.

Ultimately, what you experience in your lucid dreams is always going to be very unique and special to you, and the idea that someone else learning to take more control of their dreams somehow takes away from the enjoyment you get out of yours is as absurd as Adam and Steve's wedding somehow ruining your traditional marriage. Not wanting a bunch of clueless, transient fangirls mucking up your forum is one thing; not wanting anyone else to know your super secret handshake just makes you sound like a whiny hipster.

I watched Inception and had a terrible dark dream about keeping the corpse of my classmate in a bag for 6 months (somehow forgot about it:paranoid:)...
I thought i would have the most epic LD in my life, but no :S
Anyway, it was a very good movie, became one of my favorites.

God, some of you people are pretentious.

And I'm sure people were LDing before YOU thought it was cool, as well.

I used to feel like lucid dreaming should be something kept for myself like some others have mentioned. I have no idea why now, but working so hard at it just made it...mine. I can only liken it to the idea of working really hard and making a lot of money and you have that one thought that you don't want so-and-so to get a better position than you, or make more than you do. You just feel like you deserve it more for a brief instant before you think about how terrible that is. Like others have said, it takes so much dedication to get to the level that most people will drop it quickly anyway. But the people that stick with it deserve it just as much.

If it's not obvious yet, I don't think like that anymore and I tell everyone who will bother to listen to me about it. Just the other day my brother was so excited about a really vivid dream and a false awakening he had, and he remembered to write it all down like I told him. I just love to see people realize that there's much more to sleep than just dreading waking up for work the next day.


tl;dr: If everyone started taking up lucid dreaming, that would be pretty awesome.

Of course lucid dreaming should become popular!

If you want to be "above the crowd", do it by bringing yourself up not pushing others down. Anyway, lucid dreaming is not a gift, anyone CAN do it, most just dont know about it. I suppose you'd prefer kids not learn to read in school so you can feel special?

If lucid dreaming were as simple as a formula, then I would agree that keeping it secret is pointless and selfish. But it isn't. Lucid dreaming is an extremely introverted, reflective activity. It's not coincidence that most people here are of similar character builds - we all sought out lucid dreaming, for one reason or another. Having lucid dreaming shoved down the public's throat in movies and media just for a quick novelty fix would certainly be vexing. For one, after the whole public hype ("Wow, yeah, you can do this thing with your dreams!") fades, LDing would be seen and mocked as if it were a fad.

As a general rule, the majority of the public only become informed through powerful, money-motivated endeavours; be it the media, entertainment industry (same thing these days) or something governmental. Money corrupts. Soon you'd have technology providing a quick-fix (which we already have, and the morals of that are debatable). Personally I'd prefer not to see an entire industry made off of LDing.

I sort of agree i dont want it to become popular because I enjoy being unique and no thats not the only reaosn i LD but it will just seem not that great when everyone is just talking about it it would be fun to like brag to people about my Lucid dreams but have them understand thats why i told my friends about it but ya

Do they actually say "lucid dream" in the movie? Do you think it will make people dive into the subject? I know it would probably be good for Dream Views, but still.. i want to keep Lucid Dreaming sort of an underground thing :evil::lol:

I think that if more people knew what lucid dreaming was and how it worked, I would have something to talk about. Most people are going to think your nuts for talking about all these techniques.

It would be great to talk to somebody about it, i agree. I only know one person who says he can do it since he was little but i don't know if i should believe him, i think he just doesn't want to admit he doesn't have something under control. Anyway, i like to talk about Lucid Dreaming, but i don't want 80% of the people to know what it is. BS would spread much easier.

I think people are going to try it since they've seen inception and then think it sux when they have done like 3 RC and haven't got a lucid and then we'll be back to normal again, maybe a little bit more members since some will succed and the population is growing. you get the point.

I completely agree, there is no use trying to use the fact that you lucid dream, to gain a sense of authority... If people actually watched Inception they would realise that Inception NEVER mentions Lucid dreaming and only correctly portrays dreaming as something both mysterious and amazing... The technique they use for extraction is not actually shown and nothing is explicitly explained...

This I also agree with, it is no coincidence that the people that reside in these Lucid dreaming forums are surprisingly similar to each other.. More often than not; I find a User's profile on this website that perfectly describes why most of us are here on this forum today: "I want to reach further into the rabbit hole"... This remarkable resemblance in character is what causes most people to arrive at: Lucid Dreaming...

This is probably a good time to mention that my response to the topic this thread is derived from is in the paragraph directly above...

But even after all this, we are left with people here simply because they were eluded by large media conglomerates that dreaming is something that you can quickly indulge in.. while in simple actuality it takes much time to reach a stage of Lucid dreaming that allows people to "create" they're own dream world.. I have nothing against these people... But I prefer to also use the short amount of time I have in my mind, to reach new goals and finally understand more about what it is truly capable of...

Unfortunately, even after all this.. I'm left here having to remind the people on this thread that; I didn't explore Lucid dreaming due to Inception... This is because I'm afraid of the stereotypical image this has begun to hold...

I on the other hand have the same amount of respect for the people who found Lucid dreaming through Inception, and for the people who were first knowledgeable of the subject through other means...

P.S. In my opinion; any person that found out about Lucid Dreaming through a movie, that I believe, ONLY mentions dreaming.. is just as curious as I am about the subject of the mind... And so just as equally deserves to delve in Lucid Dreaming...

I know im a new member too, but the flood of new members here is quite overwhelming
and a little bit annoying

they dont even do a search most of the time before they post, not to be mean.

and its cool that you were brought here because of inception and all. but in a sense its all a little ridiculous
I sort of feel like the Lucid Dream community has been sort of like a tight nit group of (tending to be) artistic and wonderfully open minded people, and it used to be allot more intimate. and its sort of sad to see it go another way. although im sure it will die down in time

Im new myself here but I didnt come because of inception I want to see it though and I had no idea it was about dreams until I found this forum and saw this. Glow I would like to know more about your experience with lucid dreams.

You say inception is a lot cooler if you already know about lucid dreams so those of us who already knew about it would appreciate both the movie and the phenomenon more than someone who got interested because of the movie.

The only thing I have ever seen about lucid dreaming (and they never even mentioned the term) was on spongebob where spongebob went into a bunch of peoples dreams and made them become lucid so that they would be able to do whatever they want. but then he messed up there dreams somehow.

Waking Life is about lucid dreams. It's more of a philosophical movie though. But the way it's made looks awesome. I think i had my first lucid thanks to it.

Ive heard about that waking life movie. Someone mentioned it in a thread about lucid dreaming on another forum that actually has nothing to do with lucid dreaming.
