Question Acetyl-L-Carnitine and fluid cysts in mouth?

About 15 years ago I was taking Acetyl-L-Carntitine along with several other supplements. The ALC had a tremendous and, in my opinion, very positive effect on my general sense of daily waking lucidity and clarity, and seemed to help me with complex learning tasks (learning multiple programming languages simultaneously). However, after about a year, I started to get very painful little fluid-filled cysts in the soft tissue just inside my lower lip. When I stopped taking the ALC, the cysts went away. If I took another ALC, the cyst would appear within 20 minutes of ingestion. I experimented with this for a couple of weeks with conclusive results, and then stopped, sadly, taking the ALC. The cysts never returned.

I am seriously wanting to work with ALC again for LD purposes. I'm hoping that someone here has heard of this odd reaction to the ALC and knows by what mechanism it is caused, and if there is anything I should/should not be taking to eliminate this unpleasant side effect, and/or if there are different forms of ALC that might not have the same effect on my mouth. Regular L-Carnitine does not seem to produce the negative OR positive results I experienced with ALC.

Thanks for your wisdom & thoughts!

      Dave

This is way beyond my level and I don't take any supplements anyway. In my opinion, it sounds dangerous and shouldn't try it. Maybe those several other supplements are what caused that cysts (what ever that means). Ask a expert of this stuff and see if it's safe. Their might be someone on this forum who his an expert though.

That's what I'm thinking. Definitely wouldn't recommend the supplement route to anyone who didn't have the stomach and mind for some very serious research. Anything less would be reckless endangerment to the body, which is counter to the desire to do dreaming well...

      Talk to your doctor?

Yeah... doctor said "don't take ALC". Very helpful. Couldn't get him to understand that it was important for me to understand the mechanism by which this happened, as, since this seems to be peculiar to my physiology, it would help me to understand how my body uses the ALC and how I metabolize it. This seemed to be a topic beyond his comprehension. I now have a new doctor, but never did ask her...
