True paralysis comes when one is in REM Sleep, that is, during the dream cycle. During a typical 8 hour sleep the first REM cycle will not occur until nearly 90 minutes into sleeping, but then, through the night, they will come at closer intervals, until toward the end of the complete sleep cycle, the REM Periods will come practically back to back. This is when you have the best chance of catching yourself in Sleep Paralysis. Typically OBE'ers, out of body projectors, desire this state because it is then when it is easiest to slip out of the body and go off on lower astral adventures. But for Lucid Dreamers, it all depends on whether the Paralysis is pre-dream or post-dream. If the Dream is already over, then there is nothing to do but to let go and wait for the next REM Cycle.

I've found that if there is sufficient Consciousness Energy, then dreams easily become Lucid. When the Energy is low, even with the most obvious clues, it will not occur to one that he is dreaming. So one needs to augment one's conscious energy. One can do this by rapid breathing. Not necessarily deep breathing, but quick breathing. and allow yourself to fall back into sleep so that the next REM cycle will come simply as nature would intend, and then hopefully with the extra energy derived from your quick breathing, you will become Lucid from inside an actual dream, which will give you all of that extra time of having a Full REM Cycle to play with.

so what happens to your body during the first stages of sleep before REM, If I just lay in bed, and 90 minutes later get into SP, was I technically asleep before entering REM or are you only actually considered asleep after SP sets in. Is there a way to tell that you are actually asleep yet still concious other than remaining aware during SP??

Many Yoga Practitioners and OBE’ers will lay there fighting off sleep until Sleep Paralysis occurs, bringing with it that entry into Dream Consciousness, which the Yoga People interpret as Trance State, and the OBE’ers interpret as Out of Body Travel.

But one needs to consider that Sleep has many uses – not only the Mind needs to be restored, but also the Body. Laying awake fighting off sleep in order to bring consciousness to a REM State condition, may have an occasional usefulness, but it will be at the expense of a good nights sleep.

One will have REM Cycles and will undergo Sleep Paralysis in any case – many times each night. And if you are conscious that you are dreaming when you are dreaming, there should be no problem in catching these REM States from the inside. It is certainly as easy to realize that one is Dreaming when in a dream as it is to fight off sleep all night while laying in bed with one’s eyes shut. Yet, only one of these techniques will assure one of the healthful benefits only available to those who consistently get enough sleep.
