      REM sleep periods

This may sound like a stupid question but is a person's REM sleep period related to the time of day or to however many hours slept?

As a general rule of thumb periods of REM sleep last longer later in the night. I don't think it has anything to do with the time of day you decide to go to sleep, but yes how long you've slept does have an impact.
