Over time I've learned different techniques for controlling the dream that actually work a lot better for me. It takes some time to figure out what works best, through trial and error. For example, I didn't know about dream spinning until coming to this site, before that I was using hand rubbing; the spinning works way better for me now. I only use that if the dream is falling apart though, as far as overall clarity it hasn't really changed over time. Though there are some nights that are more vivid than other, depending on what I ate that night and other factors.
-have you always been able to control things or has this come over time?
Like I said, over time I've learned more efficient techniques for doing the same thing. Flying used to be very difficult for me, I'd always hover really close to the ground. Then I thought of a new way to visualize it in my mind and now I have no problems flying. I'm constantly getting better at things though, practice makes perfect. Plus there's so many things to do, you will never run out of new things to try
-when you WILD, do you appear at the location you fell asleep at?
Yes. Every time I've had a WILD I find myself in my bed looking at my ceiling. This is called "seeing through your eyelids." Then I get out of bed in my dream body. That's why it's really important to do an RC at this point, because a lot of people think they failed the WILD and think they're actually awake. It's not always how it goes, though. You can appear at any location.
Also, I find it funny that an alarm clock (my reality check) would instantly alert me that im in a dream, while the dragon next to me would not. I Don't think that an alarm clock would normally be a stand out indicator that I'm in a dream unless I'm checking them throughout the day for my reality checks. Does this mean more types of reality checks = more varied dream signs?
The dragon and alarm clock would be your dream signs. A reality check is something that you do in order to make absolutely sure that you're dreaming, like a nose plug, or looking at your hands to see if they're messed up. I don't know if there's any correlation between getting more varied dream signs by using more reality checks. I know that keeping a dream journal is a good way to identify what your dream signs are, because if certain things keep popping up then you will know to look for it in a dream.
One technique I've used is putting my alarm clock on a really low volume so that I hear it in my dream but don't wake up. This works as a dream sign for me, so that I can have a DILD. It sounds like it would work for you too.
