      What exactly is this?

I have had this experience many times in the past, and it used to freek me out. I would go to sleep, then I would suddenly wake up and open my eyes. I see images of things.

I once saw a butterfly, and I followed it around the room. I mean I got up in my bed and turned my head following it until it disappeared.

I keep seeing things like that from time to time. I don't feel parallized. I can move, and follow what ever I see around.

      What are these things?

Are you sure its not a waking dream? That could be the only other explanation since you're not OB.

I'm not sure what a waking dream is, but I know that I'm awake when I see those things. My eyes are wide open.

      moe,

I've had similar experiences. Usually false awakenings. One was so real that I was convinced I was lying in my bed looking around, until strange things started to happen.
The mind is an amazing thing! You should be happy that you got to experience something so neat!

A few days ago I woke up and was not sure if I was dreaming or not. I was actually awake. In my dream I thought the stairs to the upstairs was some sort of portal to another house. When I woke up it kept moving. I am sure I was seeing things of course.

      you could just be insane.

nah! this happens sometimes to me, but the best explination i have would be a false awakening.

I am surprised that this is dreaming yet I am awake and moving. I know that I am not dreaming of moving and turning my head. I actually do this until the images are gone. It's not even like I find myself awake after the images are gone. I just shake my head and think, "What the freak was that?!"

Yeap! Sounds like I am insane alright.

I've had that before. Once when I was a really little kid I woke up and watched the cartoon Beetlejuice play football all around the cupboards in my room an then disappear in the darkness. It was so bizarre. Recently I had a sleep paralysis hallucination but wasn't nearly as fun, more like mortally terrifying

I've had similar experiences, but instead of seeing definite shapes I usually see receding points of light or what appear to be like "birds" or "bats" flying around in my peripheral vision. These usually fade quickly, especially if I get up and move around or stretch and breathe deeply. Evenly distributing blood and oxygen to the system seems to bring about complete consciousness... (sometimes even though we're awake, there may be certain chemicals left over from the sleep realm.

It's wierd what the mind can make us see or feel. I mean thinking of something and imagining it is not like seeing it, and feeling something is not like remembering the feeling.

What I saw was a projection of my mind I suppose. It was as if I was seeing it.

We usually use our senses to gather input, the brain process this information and tells us what it is. First the input, then the process, and then the output. I guess I skipt on the input, and the process. I went right to the output. What's strange is that my brain made me feel that my eyes were seeing things. Even though the images did not exist, I still followed them with my eyes.

Thats kindof like when you listen to the brain wave generator for too long then when you turn it off you can still here it and you kind of vibrate all over the place.

I'm not saying you should always discount the possibility of it being something else. I'm just playing the "Skeptic's advocate" I do believe that "things" from other realms may occasionally overlap into ours, but even when they do, they should not distract us. If it increases, though, or is accompanied by any sort of discomfort, I would suggest seeing a doc...

I didn't think this would start a scare. I should say that I don't take any kind of medication, nor do I take any kind of drugs (never have been on any).

Anyway, I thought that this is something that some of you knew. It turns out that it's uncommon.

      OK... Never mind.
