The importance of Reality Checking is in giving oneself a form of Suggestion to achieve Lucidity. It would be just as well, or perhaps better, simply to suggest to oneself throughout the day, and at the onset of sleep and napping, that one should simply and directly achieve lucidity during one's dreams. But 'Reality Checking' became the favorite form of suggestion for the book pedlers and the seminar monkeys.
So it doesn't hurt to do Reality Checks, and of course people have had success with that method. My only concern is that the complexity of the method is left unexamined, and instead of perceiving the method as an elaborate means of making a simple suggestion, the people utilizing this technique suppose all the details indispensable. They are making it all more difficult than it needs to be.
For instance, when the dream provides inconsistencies with Reality so that the Dreamer will know he is dreaming, do we suppose that the dream did not provide this clue with deliberate intent and designed purpose? Indeed, people complain that they often fail to notice these inconsistencies. However, what if people simply suggested to themselves that they would REALIZE they were Dreaming. With this Suggestion, one would simply be given the Conscious Realization in the Dream that one was Dreaming -- no deduction and no logical inferences -- none of these complications and One-Two sequences that can go wrong or be missed. Simple Suggestions would provide for a Simple Technique. One would simply become aware of his Lucidity.
So why the popularity of complex hit and miss systems? it is because the Lucid Dream Industry must multiply and complicate things in order to make itself seem indispensable. They do not wish people know how easy it is, or could be, since it would somewhat dampen their enthusiasm to buying new books and going to ever more advanced seminars.
