Yume Nikki (Dream Diary)

So, there is this game called Yume Nikki aka Dream Diary in english. It's about this girl called Madotsuki which is a lucid dreamer. Her dreams actually isn't the nicest you could dream about. The goal in this game is to explore all 12 Doors in "The Nexus" and also find all the sub-worlds in the game. You're searching for different "Effects". Those can be for example: a little snow girl called Yuki Onna, a corpse that makes you shapeshift into a stoplight that freezes all the NPC's in the game, a tree that makes you a witch and many more. Many of the effects serves no purpose except for the different change in I.E. Climat or even yourself. Anyways, You have to find 24 effects and do a little "secret business" in order to beat the game. Many would call Madotsuki "Mentally Sick" because of her wierd and more nightmareish dreams. My theoyr is that her dreams represents the way she feel in real life. You can find other people in the game which reacts to different types of action. For example, There is this girl called Monoko that grows up to 3 extra arms when you use the stoplight effect. There is a theory that Monoko was hit by a car and that the arms are supposed to represent her limbs sticking out of her body and so on. There are many translations on the people in the game. Kikiyama's creation makes the most compelling argument for the possibility of a videogame to be considered art. Yume Nikki was indeed a very strange experience and I'm not entirely sure what to take out of it, but I enjoyed every second of it, and it left me with an ineffable, profound feeling. I had my first few intentional lucids due to Yume Nikki. Like Mado I set my goal to merely explore and record my dreams, and I would occasionally think "should I wake up now and remember everything perfectly, or continue the dream and risk forgetting things?". It was only a few months later that I actually started researching lucid dreaming and the prospect of manipulating the dream or even creating it.

This game was very disturbing. I am not gonna lie. I remember playing it a few years ago. When Uboa appeared I was pretty terrified. That face in itself makes it disturbing and unsettling. I can see a deeper meaning to it all though. The end was sorta depressing though... It sorta gives off a bad idea of dreaming. Not that, that matters in any way though. Point is that the game is brilliant, but demented at the same time.
