      Online-experiment: Toss coins in your lucid dreams

      Hi everyone,

      I am a phd-student at the University of Heidelberg (Germany) and I'm writing my thesis about the possibility to practice motor skills in lucid dreams. I designed a lucid dream experiment to do at home. I already conducted the experiment in Germany with great success, and I'd like to replicate the findings! Because of that I translated the experiment. The task to do in your lucid dreams is very simple: Try to toss a coin into a coffee cup!

      You can find everything you need on the website:
      http://luciddreaming.de

      It is important that you consider the following points:

      1. You should read the introduction/instructions on the webpage
      2. download and print the documents for the experiment (4 pages including instructions and protocol sheets)
      3. Do the experiment at a night when you feel confident to have a lucid dream:
      3.1. In the evening: do the coin-tossing in the waking-state and write down your hits out of 20 tosses.
      3.2. In your lucid dreams: pracitce, practice, practice!
      3.3. In the morning: do the coin-tossing in the waking state and and write down your hits out of 20 tosses.
      4. Submit your results by using the formular on luciddreaming.de --> Step 4 (Important: You don’t have to sent anything by mail!!)

      IMPORTANT: If you have irregularly lucid dreams or you are a non-lucid dreamer than PLEASE participate too in the experiment! It might be the case that the task is stimulating you to have lucid dreams, also you might have a normal dream about the coin-tossing task or you remember no dream during the night. Either case, the data would be equally important for us!

      I would be very happy if many people from this forum participate in the coin tossing task!

      best wishes from Heidelberg, Germany!

      Daniel Erlacher

      I like what your getting at.

      I thought mechanics (such as motor skills would use), do not work in lucid dreams?
      Hell, if they do, and what your testing is correct, I will be able to practice my driving a little better without any risk-taking.

      I'm yet to successfully attain lucidity, so I will help with the experiment when I do get successful.

      I like the idea of this. I, personally, haven't heard anything like this really. If it works, it could be a new way of inducing a LD for me. hehe

      That sounds quite an interesting experiment. I could give this a shot, but unfortunately I'm busy with other things

      PS. Why don't you join the research team and post in the research forum?
      Don't think about those damn kangaroos.

      Hi,

      thanks for your replies.

      @Xeroer
      Absolutely, practicing motor skills in lucid dreams will improve your skills in waking life. From a theoretical perspective this is true, thats what all the research about mental practice show. The more interesting question is, will pracitce in lucid dreams will have better effects than mental practice, but that's a long way to go...
      Do you know Prof. Tholey? He was one of the pioneers studying lucid dreams in Germany. He claimed that he learned different motor skills in his lucid dreams (e.g. riding the unicycle, skateboarding, snowboarding... I met him once in Vienna at a conference (1998) and he told me that when he started to learn snowboarding the first thing was to take away the bindings from the snowboard. I'm not sure if you are familiar with snowboarding, but it is really tricky to ride the snowboard without bindings. With his lucid dream practice he was able to do that. But of course, that are only anecdotes...)

      @phallam
      having a clear aim of what you want to do in your lucid dreams is a stimulating factor for inducing lucid dreams (e.g. MILD).

      @Hate
      Thats a good idea.

      @Awhistyle, all
      You can do the experiment several times. Make sure that you send after every try your results via the internet form. (there is one field which asks how often you take part in the experiment).

      bye

      Daniel
