Start out easy, think of something that you have really good memory of, like for example the face of a friend (you can try this with open eyes as well).
Then when you have the picture clear in your mind, try to use some other senses as well like touch reach out your hand (mentally) and perform a handshake 
When it comes to the other senses as smell and taste I suggest you imagine something you can eat instead
Also remember that with relaxation the visualization gets more and more vivid. I meditate for 40 minutes before I go to sleep, and by that 40 minute mark I can REALLY feel or see what I visualize for a few seconds and then it fades away. That state is called the hypnagogic state as you mgiht be aware of, and after that vibrations and after that one can get there.
But for now I am on the vibration stages
