      REM cycles

      So, i am in the middle of a WBTB right now. I spontaneously awoke after about 4 hours this time. My question is the following: are REM cycles constant to the minute? I mean, if i woke up after 4hours, would my cycle probably be of eirher one or two hours? Or is it usual that during the night, a person's cycle deeply vary, like one ending after half an hour, other after one and a half hour and other after one hour?

      I think REM Cycles stay more or less constant as long as you don't change your sleeping schedule much.
      Good luck on WBTB!

      Very interesting question, one that I made myself several times. My answer would probably be:

      A) either you are falling asleep later then you think;
      B) or you woke up due something and outside of rem

      Are you sure you woke up in rem? Notice that dreams can also occur in non-rem stages, so it's not that simple to say you've woken up in the end of a cycle.

      Damn it, I had no idea dreams could also occur in nREM.
      One thing I am absolutely positive is that I fell asleep pretty fast. Besides, I considered 15 minutes for falling asleep, which usually is not little for me. And, anyway, I have no garantees either that it wasn't just the beginning of the cycle... It is so complicate!

      Yeah, N-Rem dreams account for 30% of the total dreams, but they tend to be way less vivid and their content relates more to short-term and residual memory. You can even get Lucid N-rem dreams, but that's an unknown area to the majority of people, and there's not much information about it around.

      Hmm, you can always grab a iphone app and track your sleep stages, the fact is that most of them they aren't that accurate. Guess you can only be sure of what happened if you go to sleep lab

      Wow, this is amazing. I was sure dreams existed only in REM!
      Well, I got an app yesterday, but haven't tried it yet. Anyway, I am coming to realize that figuring out my cycles may not be all that mch important... :p
