Why does this happen to me?

when i set my alarm to wake up just after a REM, so i can write down my dream, i always wake up 4 or 5 times before the alarm. The first day it was fine and i remember my dream with amazing detail but now i can barely remember.

does anyone know why this might be.

So you are waking up naturally at regular intervals during the night? If that's the case, that's a good sign. If you can't recall the dream you just woke from, there are some techniques to help:

Don't move! When you wake, lay still for a few moments and keep your eyes closed. (eye mask can help). There's something about movement and light that shifts your brain into wake mode and causes the dream to quickly fade. So remain still. Now, briefly scan the dream in your mind. Try to recall how it began and the major memorable things. If that brings a good recall of the dream, you can move and begin to write in your journal. If it's still hazy, remain still and again go back to the earliest point in the dream and try to replay the events one by one. Or start at the end and try to recall events in reverse. When you start to put a few fragments in order, the whole dream will start to come together and trigger more recall. If after a few minutes you still can't recall anything, try to just sense your mood or emotional attitude from the dream and record that.

you are waking up because when you set alarm to wake you in that time, your brain remembers that you are supposed to wake up in that time (at least that's in my case) so I wake up naturally at the time alarm is supposed to ring

for dream recall, follow steps that ''sisyphus'' mentioned

Also note that your dream recall will fluctuate, some days it will be better, some days worse. It depends on the dream you are having too, I seem to remember my vivid dreams most.
