I'm with you on finding the strength to write dreams in the middle of the night. I struggle with this too! All it takes though is a bit of motivation. If we don't write down our dreams, we miss out on many benefits such as increased recall, lucidity, and the ability to read, remember, and enjoy dreams from nights ago. It's worth it to sacrifice a couple minutes of comfort to enjoy these benefits.
It's best to try to wake up naturally without an alarm. Respect for others, like your roommate, is always good. I would be a crybaby too if I was forced to wake up by alarm! Again, all it takes to wake up naturally is a bit of motivation. As you're falling asleep try to set a strong intention in your mind to wake up at 4:00. Your mind has the ability to remember to wake up even while you're asleep. I bet your roommate would appreciate it!
