This is coming from a guy who's never had a dry spell in anything before, but I believe dry spells can go on for an undetermined amount of time. I'm not sure about how they occur in the first place, but I don't think they're spontaneous. As for breaking dry spells, I think it could be easy..... if it were any other skill than lucid dreaming. Because practice never ensures lucid dreams in the first place, like other skills, it can be pretty hard to pinpoint exactly what is going wrong with your practice.
But hey, think about it like this. If you treat every chance you get lucid in a dream as a gift, it won't be so bad. If you end up getting a dry spell, it'll be just like those times when you didn't lucid dream, but when (or if O.o) the dry spell ends, you already have experience practicing lucid dreaming and lucid dreams will come quicker because of all the practice you did during and before the dry spell. Better than when you started lucid dreaming, eh?
