No doubt due to survival hard-wiring that's been with us since we needed to be wary at all times, your hearing is pretty much online throughout most of your sleep cycle, especially during REM and late REM cycles. If you program your app to say something that you will readily recognize (i.e., your own voice, or, better yet, the voice of someone close to you saying, "This is a dream."), you should be able to hear it during your dream. However:
Your message shouldn't arrive in your dream distorted, but it might be disguised by your dreaming mind (i.e., a DC walks up to you and keeps repeating that this is a dream, and you dismissively think she's a crazy fool, because you're sure you're in waling reality). So it might take a bit of practice and trial and error before you come to recognize the sound. As part of the daytime practice, you might want to play the recording (at random intervals,if possible), and do a RC each time you hear it.
