When you do your reality checks, really think about them, just don't say the words or do the action. Stop and concentrate on what you are doing. Doing 10 good attentative reality checks in a day is better than 100 careless ones. Also, Make sure your reality check is something definitive, such as trying to stick your finger through your palm.

      Good advice Barbizzle.
tommygun. You may want to use repetition prior to going to sleep. This may be more effective.
As you are going to sleep simply repeat a phrase like (I am going to remember to recognize that I am dreaming) *And mean it, say it with conviction. You will find it hard as you drift off to sleep. Keep it going as long as you can.
      . Auto suggestion!

Habits take time to form. Even sitting meditating on the subject for the whole day only has a slight chance of having an effect on the same day simply ecause a habit forms over time. In order to push something into the subconscious one needs to be concerned about the aspect for a certain amount of time, after which, it becomes a regular habit.
Usually that time isn't 1 or 2 day and not even a week. Dedication to forming a habit, however, brings great rewards.

Try writing down on a slip of paper or a notebook the date and one or two notable events from that day. Write the date as a sentence in the present tense.

It is Tuesday November 15, 2005. It was so cold that I wore my jacket for the first time this season. I was late for class because part of the parking structure was closed off for a special event and it took a while to find a new spot.

Hopefully yours will be more cheery! It's more effective to do it at night, but still really good if you manage to do it every day, no matter what time.

The idea is that this will put the impetus of your awareness on the real world, so that when you notice something strange in a dream, anything, you'll actually recognize it as out of step, question it, and comfortably judge it for what it is.

Just as Merlock said, anything that's going to help you here is going to involve some sort of new habit.
