I've found some drugs to be wildly effective in attaining lucidity and some to be serious hinderances. It varies significantly from person to person, because we all react to drugs in different ways. Using drugs for that purpose is taking a gamble, because sometimes the results will be astounding and sometimes there won't be results at all. I've also found that marijuana, while often hindering dreaming, can also be useful in attaining a state of "sleep paralysis," Old Hag syndrome.
If you plan on using any of the major hallucinogens -- LSD, psilocybin, mescaline -- be sure you're in a very sound state of mind, and have had experience with them while not sleeping. The risk of having a bad trip increases significantly when you're dreaming. Nightmares on LSD are just no fun.
Someone else mentioned salvia, and I've personally found it to be highly effective in attaining lucidity and exciting dreams. It has a long history of shamanic use for that very purpose, but it's important to keep in mind that salvia is an extremely powerful drug, and the more potent extracts, 15-20x, frequently cause hellishly intense trips and occasional blackouts.
Opiods can also be useful, and I know many people who don't normally lucid dream to have lucid dreams when on them. Opiods are also, however, some of the most addictive drugs on the planet, so it's important to be careful if you use them. The media often overblows their addictive properties, but it's still a very real possibility.
