3 Hour Sleep before Rem... had dreams

      This is really weird.
So I haven't been getting my full amount of sleep for two days.

Last night I went to bed at about 10:10 and I saw the time go 10:30.. I fell asleep later.

Then when I woke up again at 1:00, I was able to recall so many dreams.

I didnt think much about it. I just jot them down.

Then, now at 6, I thought about it. And I just had a REM sleep within 3 hours!

      Is that possible?

Might be rem rebound... We have to have rem sleep and if it gets interruppted then we get rem rebound..

i'm pretty sure the first rem period is approximately 90 minutes after sleep onset... which means you could sleep for just under two hours and remember a dream or two.

that's interesting though. i rarely remember dreams from the first four hours of sleep.

I know they say it takes 5-6 (or something) hours to get to REM stage and dream, but I often recall dreams when I've only been asleep for ~3 hours. So I don't know.

      who are 'they' exactly?

every scientific source i have seen puts the first rem stage (after the 4 preceding stages go through their progression) at around 90 minutes. including this site:

I occasionally remember dreams from my first four hours of sleep (I almost always wake up approximately four hours after I fall asleep every night), but not every time. At some point, I had trouble sleeping in the late morning for several days even though I needed to, and I was surprised to remember more dreams or more clarity in my dreams from my first few hours of sleep for a couple of nights. It's probably REM rebound.

From what I understand, REM rebound happens after not getting enough sleep (and therefore not enough REM sleep). The body tries to make up for the lost REM sleep by having more REM sleep than usual during the next sleep session.

Well, I don't know if this was due to REM-rebound or not, but a few days ago, I actually went to bed at the start of the night, woke up only one hour later, and remembered a dream! That's probably the first time I've ever remembered a dream from my first REM cycle in the night.

      why not

Sleep cycles vary a great deal between individuals and over different days.

Many people can dream in a nap after having been asleep less than 10 minutes.

I've had a few experiences where I went to sleep around 12:00 and had LDs around 1:00 am.
