      Hypnagogic Smell

I woke up at about 5:00 am~ with a not so interesting dream in my mind, woke down a keyword in my journal 'gangster(s)' (which I always seem to woke up around and then go back to sleep and have my 'main' dream of the night, went to sleep at 11:00pm), and lay there thinking of some scenes from a book, but not completely into it (which I don't usually do, I usually just go back to sleep).. couldn't fall asleep since the dog kept jumping on and off the bed every 30~ minutes, so had to get up a couple times. By now, I really wanted to just go back to sleep and have a dream. After a while though, felt quite sleepy.. then..

Steak?! I suddenly smelled a plate of meat under my nose it disappeared shortly after noticing it. Then, I brought it back by thinking of it.. (the smell wasn't as vivid though).

Then the dog starting making noise again, and got up..

So, just wondering.. was I basicly entering the hypnagogic stages? But the problem is that I didn't see any hypnagogic imagery / etc... btw, when I smelled it, I instantly thought ' I'm dreaming ! ' (but I don't think I was, since I felt my body) and that's why I tried to bring it back after it faded.

EDIT: Just read EWOLD's WILD Count yourself to sleep Technique. (especially the part where your partner keeps waking you up). Almost seems like the dog took the place of that partner, although, I wasn't really trying to WILD, and I didn't count.

It's really not a good idea trying to WiLD with a dog around!

There could be many explanations for the smell (neighbour cooking a steak?; were you hungry?), and since you didn't feel any body vibrations nor HI, There are great chances it wasn't dream-related!
I never heard of hypnagogic smell and doubt that such WiLD state even exist!

Really? Haha, I thought as you were going to sleep, 'all' your senses started to 'flip' to your mind ( I mean, don't we sometimes have a sense of smell in dreams? ).. by the way, the room / window was completely closed.. I wasn't hungry.. Ahh... Dunno. Perhaps I just saw hypnagogic imagery in the form of 'steak' and thought I was smelling it.. eh...

that's interesting. i don't see why hypnagogia wouldn't involve the sense of smell...i think most people are just completely distracted by sight and hearing to even notice smell. maybe your sense of smell is more important to you than 'normal'.

When I wake up and smell things in the night, it's usually just my housemates burning things in the kitchen.

haha, that's funny man! I never had that. But since WILDing gives you images, sounds and feelings, it's only logical it's at least Possible to smell and taste things aswell

Would be cool, tasting nice chocolate, or smeling roses.

      Would suck, tasting poo.
