      is this normal?

doesnt it take a couple hrs to reach the REM stage?

sometimes i start seeing dream imagery before ive fully fallen asleep.
last week, i dozed off and had a dream, and when i woke up, i found that only 5 mins had passed. are my sleep cycles abnormal?

According to what I've read, it's quite possible to have dreams in other stages of sleep besides REM. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Sleep is different from everyone. It's very normal for your sleep stages to differ a bit from the norm. Don't worry.

Wow, I did not know that. That makes lucid dreaming all that much more attainable.

I found this in PhillipJFry's sig. It says you enter REM for a very short amount of time before you go thorugh the other stages.
