      Asleep or not?

It happened to me several times that I'm aware of what is happening around me, I can hear what is happening around me...but in the same time I dream and I continue dreaming. But I can't just wake up to react to what is happening around.

Do I really sleep or I'm in some other state?

I know that when I meditate, I get to a similar state. But I don't dream at that time and I'm not asleep and I can "wake up" at will.

You are asleep, just interpreting input into your dreams. Your ears still hear things regardless of your state of wakefullness, and while dreaming sounds from outside often manage to be heard in dreams.

I often find my dreams try to rationalise my alarm clock going off, so some alarm within the dream will go off to give me a reason to ignore it. The fact that I remember this so well is proof that it dosen't work though, because my alarm modulates and wakes me up after 20 seconds.
