Can someone give me some information on who LaBerge is?

He is referenced in a good percentage of these threads and while I don't think it practical or even very wise to place all your faith into any one person (best to get an array of differen't sources which validate your point, think of any essay you've wrote) it is probably advisable for me to read a little about him and what he has to say so I can be more knowledgeable in discussions. So links and book names if you got 'em. It would be much obliged. Also mabye some names of other experts in the field? If you can think of any.

Lucid dream research is a very small niche field that LaBerge and another guy named Keith Hearne pretty much established by themselves. By that I mean real research and not simply literature about lucidity.

LaBerge is best known for two things: 1) he proved to the medical community that lucid dreaming was in fact real with evidence from recorded eye movements in REM that were consciously being made into a pattern by the (lucid) dreamer & 2) he developed the first generation of lucid dream assistence devices (LDAD) like the DreamLight and later the NovaDreamer.

Right now nobody is really certain if he's retired from research because The Lucidity Institute has been pretty much dormant for the past 5 years with the exception of the occassional dream workshop in Hawaii.

The most popular book by LaBerge is "Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming". Available through Amazon or at your local library.

      His web site is http://www.lucidity.com/
LaBerge is still doing research and writing.

      Some other 'experts'
Patricia Garfield (although she does not focus on lucidity exclusively, she has a broader interested in dreams)
      Jayne Gackenbach
Paul Tholey (although mostly wrote in German)
Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche (from Tibetan Buddhist perspective)
"we may accept dream telepathy as a working hypothesis." Stephen LaBerge, page 231 Lucid Dreaming 1985

I think that last one will be most interesting to check out (Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche). Buddhists are in general very disciplined.
