Now that I've introduced myself on the Newbie board, I already have an inquiry about a couple of things that happened to me this week in relevance to lucid dreaming and the many processes (WILD, MILD, etc.) one must go through to get it.

One: A few nights ago, I fell into slumber and something happened which has left me confused: I don't know if I began to obtain lucidity without really meaning to, or if it was just another dream within a dream. See, near the beginning (or not, if it was false) I was in a log cabin, cosy-looking and nothing really out of the ordinary; I was alone, nothing was surrounding me except the room and furniture/fireplace/etc. Then, suddenly, I said aloud/thought in my dream "This is a dream!" and the room became brighter... I looked at my hand and it became more avid than before. This is where I thought I was going to gain lucidity. However, my left field of vision was dark, as if my left eye was closed, so naturally I tried to make my eye open. This is where the conundrum appears: either it was only part of the dream (brightness, my left eye, the upcoming bit), or I forced myself too hard and caused my actual left eye to open, because when I "opened" it I saw my bedroom. I know it was my bedroom, because I went to sleep at about 3am and so it must've been five hours already, meaning the sun was up, so I could partially see my bed and ceiling fan. At this point, I don't remember the rest of my dream, it just breaks and I dreamed something else entirely. My question is, did I actually obtain lucidity and then lose it by opening my left eye, or did my dream just trick me? Is it possible to do this, to lucidly dream without preparing yourself to? (Wake Initiated, etc.)

Two: Last night, I wasn't actually trying to attempt lucid dreaming, but I thought to do a relaxation method to help myself fall asleep faster. I did the exhale counting one, breathe in and then out and count 1, 2, 3... well, when I reached around 100-110, out of nowhere my body jerked forward. Shoulder at the front, since I was lying on my side. It wasn't so much as a violent jerk, but rather very unexpected, and I panicked, I had no idea if it could happen along with weird sensations. Right after this push, I felt a vibration pulse inside me. I'm sure the vibration is part of the sensation one might feel during WILD or whatever, but the random jerk forward seems strange to me. Can this happen, or was it due to the fact I just couldn't relax myself all the way? I also need to stop panicking everytime my body thrums or I get near the lights/noises one hears during WILDing/etc. It sucks when I become so nervous I feel the last 30 minutes amounted to nothing!

one: sounds to me like you were defenately lucid. you said to yourself, in dream that you were dreaming, so you, indeed, "gained lucidity." what you are calling "gaining lucidity" is dream control. i'm suppposing you knew you were dreaming the entire time, but you accepted things as if it were a dream, and therefore continued with the dream as you normally would. your eye theory (where you opened your actual eye) sounds like a defenate possiblity. although if this does happen again in the future, i would do a reality check just to make sure. and it is defenately possible to have a lucid dream without and preparedness. people have lucid dreams when they are young and, obviously, have no idea that lucid dreams are even possible.

two: sounds to me like you had a hypnic jerk (theres the wikipedia on it) and its completely normal. a majority of people have it occur, and i believe its part of the transition from consciousness to sleep paralysis (dream mode). as for the panicing stuff, i do the same thing, you're just going to have to work on keeping calm.

keep trying. you'll get it eventually. if you need any more help, feel free to PM. and welcome to the forums

Uhm... I'm quite speechless. Thank you greatly, you've answered my questions so clearly!

Wow, hypnic jerks, huh? I've got to keep that in mind, it happens to my friend as well, although she mostly has the "falling sensation" or something similar. Again, thanks so much, I'm going to look deeper into this stuff...

      And thanks for the welcome!

well, congratulations, you had your first lucid dream!!!

      Well done you!

and yes, hypnagogic imagery or movement is quite common as you fall asleep...I usually end up trying to thump someone, or feel like i'm falling down a flight of stairs.

Well... I guess so! It's a shame it didn't last long, but nonetheless a good thing that it even happened, especially since I didn't try to induce it in any way like WBTB.

      What an odd dream!

I also sometimes feel myself try to "jump" in my bed, as if jumping over an object while running. It's so weird!
