I don't know if it is even possible to create, but I realized if someone were to create a machine that would allow people to Lucid Dream any time for as long as they wanted by manipulating brainwaves or whatever, the effects could be horrendous. I in no way say that normal, nighttime Lucid dreaming is dangerous, but if people could do this at any time, much of the world would probably use this to escape reality. They could do whatever they wanted for as long as they wanted. Facilities would probably be created where caretakers would keep everyones' vitals controlled, while they just LDed on and on. Society as we know it would collapse, and there would be a world ruled by people's desire to just have fun and do whatever. I do not want to be a doomsayer, but I believe that the effects of a Lucid Dream Machine would be the end of the world as we know it, especially in the Western world, where people are affluent, and could afford this. I am wondering what other people think of the idea of a Lucid Dream Machine, and what you think it would do.

i agree. and it defenately seems like a possibility for the future. i mean we clone people and stuff. why not a lucid dreaming machine?

also, since were're on the topic of "dream machines" i think it would be amazing to create a machine that could actually record dreams. like a video camera, but its hooked up somehow to your brain.

i guess it would be a dangerous process for simply recording a dream :/

Many people in society are already escaping reality in some way. Drug and alcohol use are the obvious escapes, but consider other socially accepted activities. A lot of people disappear from vital living as long as they are at work each day. Many people escape reality by eating too much. Some escape reality by exercising too much. Chasing money is an escape. We seem to be living in a world ruled by a few people's desire to have ever more money and ever more power.

Giving everyone the chance to ld easily would be attractive to a lot of people for a while, but they would get used to it, and then want whatever the next big thing is. Anything that is just a quick escape will not give lasting satisfaction, and I believe lasting satisfaction is what a lot of us are really looking for.
The new evolutionary paradigm will give us the human traits of truth, of loyalty, of justice, of freedom. These will be the manifestations of the new evolution. And that is what we would hope to see from this. That would be nice.

The cloning process is not even close to the same technics that are going to be used for a lucid-dream-o-machine.

In order to make a lucid dream machine, we need to trick the brain into thinking, that you are sleepy all the time, so that we will never wake up. Secondly, we to feed the person while sleeping. Also muscles will be a big problems, if we should ever wake up again. Last, but not least, we have to make sure that we're lucid all the time. This could be done with simple brainwaves and such.

The only problem is probably to make our selfs sleepy all the time.

In order to be able to record our dreams, we just need a way to translate "brain-dream" language, into computer language, so that a computer can create a picture/movie from our dream. Shouldn't be dangerous though.

---------
Lost count of how many lucid dreams I've had

That would be amazing! I would only like it if it could not be done secretly.

i was simply making a point with the cloning example. basically pointing out that we have no way of telling whats possible. people have already figured out how to play god! honestly, i think it sounds like a possiblity.

i was thinking that it would probably have to hook up to your brain somehow, but now that i think of it, that doesn't make much since. i figured if it had to hook up to your brain then they would have to do surgery and stuff simply to make it so you can record dreams :/

well, hav u watched the matrix? yu see how the machines plug the humans into the matrix world? its like a hole in the back of ur head and a metal plug in that lead through to the front of the brain, contacting each responsive part of the brain. now, something like this is impossible because extensive brain damage would really mess u up. and any other way would prolly give u a brain tumor or sumthin.

The dream machine thing sounds like a very good idea. But i dont think it will ruin society. It would be cool to have a machine that could link peoples dreams and creat a pretty neat lucid scenario. Of course you would have to pay to do it it could not be free (pretty pricey). You could have this big sessions where you could play out a movie and be in it with friends. Oh you and whoever can create a pretty neat fantasy of what you would like. I dont see how society would degrade with this. It would be a prety kick a** breakthrough though. I would really contribute to something like this. Sound like the matrix sort of... The people had no freaking clue though except for a few.

I think society would degrade, as it would be like a video game, but 1000 times more addictive. Plenty of people manage to screw up their lives because they're too addicted to a PC game. This would be way more addictive, and people might decide to just live in their lucid world.

Whoa I'm not talking about a permanent hook up. We are talking about an induced sleep and about and hour of entertainment. (Restrictions may apply) lol. People do alot of things to escape from reality. But that hasent necissarily crippled society in such a horrible way, but yea it can mess it up pretty bad. It is like a virtual reality really. Hook someones concious up to something like someone said befotre computer laguage where images can be fed to a person or scenarios. Or rather pu them in one. Addicting? yes i agree lol.

interesting thought

this was the plot of a book in the PENDRAGON series that cam out a few years back. I forget the title but a whoel society spent almost 100 percent of its time in a virtual reality type thign in which they could do whatever they wanted and then they all died or something

it woudl be good, but only in moderation
*note*^ the above comment was not meant to be hurtful, nor insulting. It is just another of my cynnical observations of fact. If you happened to be offended by my logic, too bad.

one pill makes you larger
one pill makes you small
and the pill that your mother gave you
doesn't do anything at all
go ask alice,
when shes ten feet tall

When they come for me i'll be sitting at my desk with a gun in my hand wearin a bullet proof vest
singin my my my how the time does fly when yo know your gonna die by the end of the night

I don't remember leaving that post, but I have officially quit drinking, again. Interestingly, the last time I did that on this site was last October.

To be on topic, the dream machine would be a better activity than drinking. At least in that state I would know what I am doing. I don't think dreaming for as long as you want to could get you to the point of not knowing how you are screwing up. You could always keep an attitude of, "I have another life I need to tend to."
How do you know you are not dreaming right now?
