I got a trampoline a little while ago. I can do front flips and stuff, but I want to learn to do a back flip. I know that I can do one, but I'm afraid that I would break my neck. Do you think that it would work to practice backflips in a lucid dream and then try one in real life? or would the physics in a dream be too off that in real life, it would be totaly different and I could end up breaking my neck anyways? I've had one LD so far and I was wondering if it is a good idea to try practicing backflips in a dream if I get the chance?

well do you have a little fence around your trampoline? if you do then go for it, you'll probably be fine. if not and your that worried, i'd suggest doing a few off a diving board to get the feel of them and then it should be no problem.

all you really have to do with a backflip is completely commit to it and you'll probably be fine. if you hesitate, you might get hurt but i'm sure breaking your neck would be a freak accident.

wrong forum btw, i would have put this in the lounge.

Good advice on backflips, Casualtie. But actually his post was in the correct place. I think you skipped over the part where he was asking if it is a good idea to first practice them in lucid dreams. Personally I don't know if it is or not. If it was something like learning the piano or shooting a basketball I'd say you might as well try, what is the harm. But if it could lead to a broken neck, well then you might want to be a bit more careful.

      Good luck.

bah right. i did read that but forgot about it, so i guess i failed to answer your question.

it is possible to practice things like this in your dream. i've heard people saying they practiced stuff like snowboarding in a lucid dream, so i'm sure the same goes for backflips.

i actually did a backflip in my last lucid.

I think it's quite possible. I had a dream when i was around 9 where I was at my school and I was doing a hole bunch of backflips. I can backflip now and it feels exactly the same as it did in my dream 7 years ago.

well, since you havn't really done a backflip your dream would include only what you think a backflip would be like. Therefore it probably wouldn't work too well =P.

You can probably practice in LDs after having done a few in real life however. though I can't guarentee the physics will be right.

      I agree with Arby.

I say just go for it in real life and don't worry about breaking your neck. I learned how to do back flips and backwards No hands by trail and error on grass, I did get bruises but that's part of the game.

They are easy enough to do in real life. Just throw yourself backwards - keep your eyes open so you can focus on how far you've spun. I've you're worried about it, just throw yourself harder than you think you need as you only end up landing on your arse if you go to far.

I dunno if doing them in an LD will help all that much, if you haven't done them in real life but, try them on the trampoline without getting a lot of bounce, first.

Stand near the center of the trampoline (maybe a little closer to the front edge than the edge behind you), bounce once (meaning jump up once, Very Softly, and bounce when you come down) on that first real bounce, swing your arms up and over your head, continuing their momentum so that you Land On Your Hands, swinging your feet up and over your body just far enough so that the rest of your body lands on your stomach.

The point is, at first, to get used to the feeling of seeing the trampoline under you, while upside down. Don't worry about completing the backflip at first, or you're likely going to over rotate. Unless you know how to recover from over-rotation, (which is to let your legs collapse so that you land on your ass and not on your feet) that can be a Very Bad Thing, because you're going to bounce off your heels and fall backward. Been there. Done that. It sucks.

Once you're able to get the hang of landing on your stomach, try pulling your feet down enough to land on all fours, without letting your chest hit the trampoline. Once you're comfortable with that, try no hands. Just remember, it's much better to under-rotate than over-rotate, so don't spin too fast.

I've got the same thing. I can front flip [almost double] but it seems more scary doing it backwards. Have you ever tried an elasto trampoline? One of those where you're held up by elastics, which makes it easy to backflip double or triple?
