Thumbs up

Why Is lucid dreaming so unusuall??? I mean I´ve never heard or read about it anywhere. And nobody that I know knows about it. I learned what it was from my friend who heard it from someone else. I´ve seen a documentry about sleeping disorters where they talked about sleep paralyzing, but they didn´t even mention lucid dreaming.

its not unusual, and it was actually been around for many, many years.

THe problim is, very few people ever find out about it, and many who do do it, dont know what it is called, and are mocked by there friends who think it is a hoax.

Its the name. Because it isnt so well known, and has a "Special Name," people shrug it off saying its some fake paranormal crap, when they know nothing about it. Its scientifically proven (which is sad as it shouldnt have to be), and its not even all that unbelievable. You know your dreaming. Thats it. How is that so hard to believe?

Its just the fact that people havnt heard the name for it before.

This really amazes me too. I was 30 years old before I ever heard of lucid dreaming. By that age, something that profoundly different, it is hard to imagine you never heard of it. Nor did any of my friends and family. They all think it is a hoax of some sort.
Even though I imagine almost all people have had at some point, a particular strange experience while asleep that they could not explain.
So it gets cast aside.
Being that everyone is capable of doing this, it is even harder to believe that it is not more widely excepted.

I have heard so many stories that people think they experienced a dead one coming to them in there sleep or alien abduction...no-no -no!!! It can all be explained... if you would just listen. Open up your preconceived notion of what you call life, AND LISTEN :!:

aaahhhhh. sorry for the rant. As you can probably imagine, I too have struggled with the same question.

A lot of the people I talk to about lucid dreaming have actually heard about it. It was kind of a small phenom in the early 80's and was picked up by such magazines as OMNI. It actually was published in the Sunday comic Beekman's Place.

The saddest thing I continue to run into is, yes, people have heard, but just don't care.

A typical convo I might have goes like this.

Friend: Say, you are into dreaming, right?
Seek: Yes, I help run a lucid dreaming site
Friend: You mean like dream control?
Seek: Yes, imagine, being able to do anything you want in your dreams.
Friend: I had a dream the other night, can you interpret it for me?
Seek: Well, I'll try, but I don't put a lot of stock in dream interpretation *heavy sigh and shakes head*

It's almost like there is some kind of mental block...
you must be the change you wish to see in the world...

I think that is exactly what it is Seeker.
It is a pretty profound thing to get your head around at first if you think about it.
So many people say.. oh ya I have those. But once you begin to discuss it in further detail, you know they really do not know what lucidity IN a dream really means.

Here's a funny thought: maybe it's a control thing?! People love to have control in their lives, or more exactly, people love to think they have control in their lives. You need a steady job, you need insurance, you need a retirement fund, you need permanence, predictability, and stability. People are told they want security. People are told to minimize risk.

What does it take to learn lucid dreaming? Paying attention to your dreams, something that people start out with no control of! So, in the quest to learn lucid dreaming, people must face something within themselves that they have no control of. Maybe they will gain control, but that complete lack of control, I believe, is scary to most people. That, and although they're "just" dreams, there's a realness to dreams that you can't hide from, in the ways that people hide from waking reality every day.

Does that make any sense?
The new evolutionary paradigm will give us the human traits of truth, of loyalty, of justice, of freedom. These will be the manifestations of the new evolution. And that is what we would hope to see from this. That would be nice.

I know exactly what you mean. When I start talking about lucid dreaming, how it's knowing you're dreaming and learning to exercise control over the dream, I get pulled into the interpretation thing. Like you, I don't set much store by interpretation since I believe the only one who can effectively interpret dreams is the dreamer themselves.

Okay, heres a funny little segment from a convorsation I had with a friend, just proving the ignorance some people have:

Him: Whatcha up to?
Me: Just posting on Dreamviews. You know about Lucid Dreaming?
Him: Omg, there is no such thing. Its another stupid fairy tale magic think like telekinesis or psychic powers. It doesnt exist.
Me: And you would know this... how?
Him: Because I've done my research. It doesnt exist
Me: Huh. Hmm.... what about just dreaming and realizing your dreaming? Done that?
Him: Oh hell yeah. Who hasnt?
Me: Thats a Lucid Dream you moron!!

there was silence for about 3 minute in the window

Him: oh....
Me: You do realize there is nothing paranormal about it, and that it is scientifically proven. All it is, is knowing your dreaming
Him: Oh... well how was I supposed to know?
Me: I dunno, that apparent research you did?

Kinda sad really...

(This isnt the exact convo, but its pretty accurate.)

Looks like your friend got pwned.

I'm really surprised about how lucid dreaming is considered to be 'unusual' too. Most people tend to ignore it because it's new to them. That's where the phrase "don't knock it 'till you've tried it" comes in.

That's a good one, Exobyte - especially the part about all the "research" he's done.

I wish I had saved the actual convo It was quite funny really. He even said that we'd have to be stoned to believe in something as farfetched as Lucid Dreaming XD

I've tried to get a hand full of friends to join me in lding half believed me and the other half even experienced them, I was so close to getting one of my friends to liking it, she was very open minded, but ofcourse the writing down your dreams part freaked her out the most, and now she's just prone to yell everytime that topic comes up, also my english teacher had lucid dreams aswell, however after I told her about them I doubt she googled it or anything.

I wanna be the very best
Like no one ever was
To lucid dream is my real test
To control them is my cause
