I started doing them today, about one an hour, but I don't really know if I'm supposed to do them to form the habit, or to actually see if I'm dreaming. Also, is there a "best" reality check, I've been trying to stick my finger through my palm and breathing through my nose while it's plugged.

Well it's sort of a combination of both I think. You need to get the habit of doing RC's. But you have to make sure that when you do an RC you know that you are not dreaming. Someone had a very good post on RC's and how to do them correctly (not just doing them without thinking about what you're doing). I use the nose RC. That's how i've become lucid. Its funny one time I tried the palm RC in a dream and it didn't work. But don't think it won't work for you, otherwise it actually may not work.

Alright, thanks. And are LDs so realistic that you are kinda surprised when a RC works?

The best RC I´ve tried so far have been to count my fingers. There is allways something weird that happens when doing it in the dream. And Visualising yourself lucid dreaming when you´re in in RW, is also effective.

The RC I've always used that can be done easily and inconspicuously is to find some writing or a clock (digital is easier), look at it, glance away, then quickly look back. Every time I've remembered to perform this RC in a dream, the time or the writing has suddenly changed into a scrambled mess.

Just wondering if i'm dreaming is usually enough for me. You get to a point when you can feel if its a dream or not. At that point, I do a RC anyway, just to make sure its a dream. Sometimes the reality checks fail, (for instance, this one time i tried reading text, it was the same all three times) but I knew it was a dream and went off flying.

Yeah, I find that the nose plugging thing works very well for me. I don't think there's been a single dream I've had where that hasn't worked for me. If I had a bottle of water around, I'd try and breathe through that, (the water) because in dreams, I find that whenever I swim, I can breathe underwater. Hmmm.
