I've been practicing for a couple weeks and i had my first two nights ago.. i tried to breathe while plugging my nose and found out i was dreaming but then it all went black and i got excited and lost the dream. Then, last night the exact same thing happened i realized i was dreaming and i lost it again. i was wondering if i keep doing what im doing if eventually i will get in the habit of maintaining the dream to where i can actually do things instead of find out im dreaming and then wake up... any help?

Hi drewh, congrats on your first success! Theres lots of different stabilization techniques, it just takes time to figure out which one works for you. Eg. Spinning, rubbing hands together, walking, talking or making sound, sexual stimulation, etc. For me rubbing my hands together always helps, spinning is hit or miss for me so i dont use it often. You also have to stay calm and breathe, many times the shock of realizing your lucid caues you to hold your breath a moment which triggers waking up.

Rubbing hands works for me. Sexual Stimulation seems to make me "lose it" fast. So, last night during and LD I tried to rub my hands during sex. Didn't work.. I need to try more things than sex in my LDs.. lol

yeh congrats on breaking through (...one point )

Looks like you only have that one more barrier between you and a full lucid! I personally like to be rational and logical when it comes to maintaining a dream state.

I know : if i get too excited then i will lose it.
When i become lucid i have to tell myself "Don't get excited!!!...yet.

i try to basically picture myself as a blank canvass and let the dream world run through me until i find a centre and can begin to experience it fully.

I know how great it feels when you first get into it ! but if you are looking for control, try to calm your mind and reactions. Maybe even try it in waking life sometimes. See if you can hold back just a bit before you get overly excited about something that happens to you while wake.

Those stabilization techniques that imaginefication mentioned also help if you can remember to use them. Now you'll have two things to think about (staying calm, and ST's ) so hopefully if you cannot remember one, you can remember the other.

I agree, sexual stimulation makes me lose it as well, but if I manage to reach orgasm sometimes it triggers a long series of stable lucids, surprisingly in the morning my boxers rarely contain any man pudding though?

      lol! Man pudding!

For me, I used the rubbing hands technique on my first WILD I ever had (I normally do DILDs).

For some reason I Was more "concious" in the WILD, and could practically remember everything from waking life. Rubbing hands worked very well. I had to repeat it often. But once I got to where I wanted, I'd forget and lose it.

My 2nd WILD I did it as well.. worked great.

Last night my first DILD since my WILDs last week once I became lucid it was like I remembered to rub my hands. So WILD "knowledge" transferred to DILD knowlege. When I did it, I remember thinking "wow, that was almost like 2nd nature".

hopefully I'll wild again tonight if I can lay off the scotch.. lol but it's so good!

      Yeh thats right
Only rub them together to help focus your LD.
Most actions that you do in an LD will help you to stay conscious in the LD

The second you start feeling like it's fading, start rubbing. Try to feel the warmth created by rubbing your hands, and look at your hands while doing it.

Its amazing that I was able to do it 3 times now without thinking.

It's the "looking at your hands" bit that's important. The rubbing is just a device to make you notice and then look at your hands.

I actually rub my hands for nearly the entire dream, every now and then I stop and look at my hands a moment without rubbing them together, but while Im walking around I rub them together without seeing them at all.
