      As topic says.
I haven't see any explanation to this yet if there is any other existing thread please link, though I couldn't find any...

Is it your imagination only and if so why does it go crazy during SP?

      Thanks

My imagination never goes crazy in the sleep paralysis, but I find it very uncomfortable not being able to move.

SP is only scary to those that do not know what it is. Whenever it happens to me, I'm kind of like...SP, cool!

I don't think it needs a "scientific" explanation. Its purely psychological. You can't move, your restricted and can't do anything about it. Your paralyzed, thus vulnerable. Being that restricted scares people. Not to mention with things like Hypnotic Sounds and Imagery, especially the sounds, being so utterly realistic seeming, it can scare the crap outta someone.

But thats only until you get used to and understand it, as Seeker said.

Ok but why do you get vibrations and stuff?

I think vibrations are caused by one's imagination or something. I haven't experienced any vibrations during sleep paralysis myself.

Interestingly, I've occasionally found that I've experienced the weird feelings of intense paranoia and fear usually associated with SP after waking up. Especially if I wake up suddenly. I'll find myself lying still for a few minutes or so, gripped with a feeling that another presence is in the room with me, even though I am wide awake. No idea why this happens, but it has led me to think that perhaps the fear is not actually a direct response to the paralysis but a result of something else.

I remember, very very vaguely, hearing or reading somewhere that it's been observed that a severing of the two different sides of the brain can result in a feeling of constant paranoia and fear, like someone that you can't see is following you around. It's interesting that almost all accounts of SP include the feeling of another presence in the room. Maybe in REM the two sides of the brain stop communicating with one another or something like that, I don't know? Whatever it is, I'm sure there must be a physiological explanation for the fear, because I've experienced SP regularly since being a teenager and I know exactly what it is, but it still causes me a lot of irrational fear.

It's a fascinating subject. I wonder what brainwaves are present during SP, seeing as you are actually conscious but still in REM?

I agree. When I first started having SP it scared the crap outta me. I heard things and imagined things were there to get me that weren't. After I read up on it eventually my mind quit playing tricks on me like this. I just realized that it is a natural thing and all the hallucinations and weird noises just stopped. Now if I get it I just feel as if I'm bouncing or swaying and I'll here normal distinguisable type sounds. It's all in your mind and once you realize that you will conquer it and have more fun with it.

Sleep Paralysis. When we sleep, the brain injects a chemical into our bodies to paralyze our muscles. That way we don't act out our dreams physically.

if your body is paralyzed when sleeping then why do you roll around in your sleep and move your arms?

You are only paralysed in certain stages of sleep. The body subconscious rolls over every 15 minutes or in case you are sleeping on your arm or something like that, but I think that's at a different stage of sleep.

My theory is that the vibrations are the result of your being concious while entering SP. They do not happen in the normal transition to SP and sleep, mainly during WILD.
