Okay, so if i got up a little before the REM period i want to go in, can i still go into it, or do i have to be asleep and then wake up in it? I want to go to sleep and wake up 5 hours after so i can be in the third REM period, but I want to use the whole REM period so i want to get up a little before it would start.

It doesnt really matter, as long as you wake up. Also, if you plan to use an alarm clock to wake you up, it is not a very good idea... Since the alarm clock pretty much shocks your body into waking up, so you have have trouble falling back asleep. That in turn may cause you to abandon whatever technique you are trying to use.

Yeah, an alarm clock can shock you awake if its too loud, but on low volume you have a chance. As long as it doesn't wake you too much, you should be able to do whatever method you want. I would reccomend waking up right after the REM period starts

You'll need to practice with that to find the perfect time everyone's REM periods are slightly different. As for when to wake up, if your alarm clock is quiet enough, then it won't wake you up until you are just in or right before a REM period as you'll be in deeper sleep and won't hear it yet. If you make sure you don't shock yourself awake, just starting the REM period would probably be best I am guessing.

I don't think it's that important that your alarm clock for an REM period. REM, with the exception of stage 1, is the lighest sleep you have (see below). If allowed to wake without any external stimuli (i.e. alarm clock) you are most likely to wake directly from REM. I don't know about you, but I usually feel the most rested when I am allowed to wake without the alarm clock. So waking from REM might not be so good.

FILD requires you to be really tired because you need to fall back asleep quickly. It's tricky because if your alarm clock is loud enough to wake you from stage 3 or 4 (these according to my psych. book are the most difficult to wake from) it might be loud enough to startle you further awake. BUT, If you aren't startled by it you are likely to be at your sleepyest when woken from stage 4 sleep. You are also likely to be disoriented and maybe forget to FILD.

      My advice would be:
If your alarm scares you awake, keep it low and let it wake you
If you alarm doesn't startle you, turn it up and make it wake you, you are more likely to be tired enough to FILD quickly this way.

experimentation is probably the best way, but still—this might be worth a try.
