So I just moved out of the country and finally have settled down again enough to start working on lucid dreaming again.

Last night I had a dream (that was obviously a dream in many aspects, why I didn't recognize this I attribute to not keeping a dream journal) but In this dream I was shot a few dozen times and I lay there dying (with the whole last few moments of consciousness racing through your mind) and as I felt myself slip away (to die) I woke up in sleep paralysis. I have experienced sleep paralysis more than a few times but this morning I got myself out of sleep paralysis by swallowing.. for the life of me I couldn't move any other part of my body or even control my breathing that well but for some reason I was able to swallow and it brought me back to wakin reality. It's happened at least one other time. has anyone else experienced this?

      happy dreaming!

Sleep paralysis is the result of residual consciousness arising before the reticular activation system can synthesise monoamine oxidase productivity.

To awaken the RAS (reticular acitvation system) usually takes a sense of fear or immediate external stimulation. Try staring at something in the room that frightens you - keep in mind that internal fear (fear of the paralysis) does not seem to register same into the amygdala (fear complex).

It usually just takes a couple minutes or you can simply fall back asleep. However, swallowing seems to be an interesting idea as it would surprise the body with the activity. I like it - I would not have thought of that since you still do have moderate motor control of your head.. most of the time.

I will try it out as well

I would rather not do that. I like my SP because it makes me lucid. Instead I concentrate on "rolling" out of my body (aka astral projection, which I think is just another type of lucid dream) and going into a lucid dream. That always stops the paralysis for me and as a bonus I get to have an LD as well. You should try it.

I haven't experienced that, yet I have with enormous willpower, kind of forced my body to move, i cant quite describe how... but never with swallowing. It makes sense though since you can do breathing that you'd be able to swallow. But don't automatically try to get out SP can be the way to LD's, I wish I could get it all the time

What I do is put the alarm on the other side of the room and make it REALLY loud so I HAVE to get up and shut it off =P

I agree w/ tomeeka and bro. SP is my personal favorite way to induce a Lucid Dream, b/c the moment you realize you cannot move, you know you are still asleep and can then go about separating your dream body from your actual body. You can do so by rolling out of your body or by trying to float out of your body (not recommended, b/c it takes a while to do and makes me lose my control).

To get out of SP I move my arms up as far as I can. Pushing the limits seems to make me tired and usually brings me out of SP
