I have had a handful of lucid dreams, and each one has been cut off by a fake awakening. Last night for instance, I realized I was lucid when walking out of my parents house; I jumped into the air and flew around my neighborhood soaking in the awesome feeling of flying. I then decided I wanted to fly into outer space and dance on the stars. I started to fly straight up and began spinning; I closed my eyes and imagined myself in outer space. When I opened my eyes -to my dismay- I was in my bed. My arms and legs were sprawled into the air, and I felt stupid in the awkward position. The fake wakening lasted for a few minutes before I really woke up - never thought I was still dreaming despite weird things still happening.

Do fake awakenings become more seldom as I get used to lucidity, or am I doing something wrong? When I had my first lucid dream, I hoped that I would not wake up from excitement... and it made sense that I should have a fake awakening after such a thought. The other situations seem really random, and they always fool me .

Same thing happened to me yesterday. false awakening right after gaining lucidity. I think the only way to get around the false awakening trick is to get in the habit of doing a RC every time you wake up. I had a few lucid dreams before and never had a problem with getting over excited and waking up, but after reading some posts and learning that its a common thing to get over excited the first few times, I got tricked into thinking I woke up from over excitement. so just wake up and do a RC and you should be ok.

i had like 4 false awakenings this morning and it pissed me off so i decided to do an RC out of the blue. pinched my nose and i could still breath. i genuinely did not expect it to wokr b/c i thought i was awake. i suggest you use the nose pinching every time you wake up.

False awakenings can be a bit troublesome. I suppose that certain people are more susceptible to false awakenings. Getting more used to lucidity also means getting better at determining if you are dreaming or not, so if the false awakenings do continue, chances are that you'll get progressively better at recognizing them as false awakenings. From that point it is just a matter of changing your dream back to the way it was and continuing with the dream.

If anything, false awakenings become more common as you practice lucid dreaming, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Eventually they become easy to recognize, more so than regular dreams, in my experience. Also, for a lot of people, they are extremely easy to induce during dreaming, even when you think the dream has faded beyond recovery, allowing you to start a new lucid dream without much difficulty.

Thanks for the input everyone - I'll begin doing a hand reality check every time I wake up (I am partial to the hand check as my hand not only has an obscure amount of fingers in my dreams, my hands typically have an odd translucent color to them which I find fascinating. I did a nose check once in a dream after doing a hand check to see if I was dreaming; even knowing that I was just dreaming, the nose check felt bizarre and kinda scared me .)

Serith brings up an interesting point. This past week, I had a false awakening with an non-lucid but extremely vivid dream. I looked up at my clock and saw that it was 11:30... thought I was late for class and bounced out of bed to get dressed. I grabbed my backpack and ran out of my room. I then really woke up and the clock read 9:21 AM. I was still kind of panicked and confused upon awaking.

"What's the point?" you may be wondering. This is the only time I am able to conclusively recall having a non-lucid false awakening (granted I have only been concerned about my dreams for about a month).

Should I be expecting more false awakenings from non-lucid dreams as well as lucid dreams?
