      Why does this happen?

I won't remember any of my dreams until a couple hours after I wake up. For example, if I dreamed I was riding my bike, I would only remember it when I see my bike after the dream is over.

A lot of times you dont really remember dreams, but then throughout the day, you see something similar to what was in your dream and it reminds you of it

It's what we like to call reconstructive memory...kinda what Tim said.

When you wake up in the mornin, try and remember anything, even feelings...

You just need to remember a "thread" of the dream. For example, if you talked to a goat in the dream, remember that when you wake up. Suddenly you'll remember other things, and it will all come back to you in a flood.

      That's a start...
      If I hadn't made me
I'd be more inclined to bow
Powers that be would have swallowed me up
But that's more than I can allow...

I know what you mean. Much of my dream memories come from deja vu's during the day time. I'm really perplexed how I wasn't aware of them until something triggered it.

Yeah it also all depends on what cycle of sleep you're waking up from. If you're awaking from Non-Rem Periods then it would be pretty hard to remember that dream after you wake up. You sometimes would need some kind of clue. Thats why its better to set your sleep patterns identical to wake up during or sometimes after REM. I say its always best to wake up during REM. you find out what your REM periods are throughtout sleep. If you have any kind of dream, more than likely disturbing and you wake up, you should record that time. This would give you indication of your REM period. Thats if you go to sleep around the same time everynight give or take 20 or 30 minutes.

If there's any small part of your dream you remember, try and hold on to it... then start to think back, what happened before that, and then and before long you'll have your whole dream back... Its really strange because its right there in your brain, you just need to figure out how to remember it... and by tracing back what you did that way you'll be able to recover big parts of your dreams.
