      Weird Twitch

I was just comming into a dream, when I saw a soccer ball come at me. I went to kick it, and my leg twitched in real life, and I woke up. I figured that I was slightly dreaming, but hadn't completely entered sleep paralysis yet. Has this happened to anyone else?

That's fairly common. It's called a "hypnic jerk", because they seem to generally occur more during the hypnogogic state.

It happens to me to. Its because SP hasnt fully took effect, and you have premature reactions. Do you sometimes have the feeling of falling backwards for a long time too??

It's funny how many times this same question has been asked over the years (by myself included when I first joined), but everyone calls it something different when they don't know what it is, so you can't even do a successful search for it.

This happens to me all the time. Usually when i fall asleep for the first time at night. When it first started happening to me it was fairly shocking.

I belive it is called a hypnic jerk.

      totally common

it's weird though that you're usually half into a dream (or minidream maybe) when it happens. And usually for me it seems that the dream is based on the jerk, yet precedes it. Like I'll be walking and then trip and jerk or be riding my bike and crash, yet I don't feel like I would have dreamed it if it weren't for the "hypnic jerk" climax. Maybe dreams are just a type memory of an event that never happened. Are there theories that say something like that?

anyway, anybody have dreams that have nothing to do with the jerk? Or does anybody know anything that could explain what I'm saying? Or is this idea nonsense?

The falling backwards feeling has happened to me. It was when I was picturing myself catching a baseball. I could clearly see myself going back and back and when I hit the wall I had a hypnic jerk. It's a pretty weird feeling.

Yeah I get this a lot. My ex girlfriend was really bad for it, I was frightened some nights that I would wake up with a black eye or something.

I have not had the feeling of falling backwards, but just before I drift off I feel like I drop down quickly. Its a weird feeling...

Dammit this happened to me twice in about a minute last night! I was back from a long day of paintball and I kept seeing my friends running towards me about 5 feet away just walking the trigger and I kept getting freaked out and trying to dodge and then waking myself up, it was very annoying and I felt stupid .
