Thread: Asleep during Life = Asleep during Dreams?

when i was younger i lucid dreamt every night without knowing it. i was in complete control of everything. The last two years I have stopped dreaming completely. I cannot remember a single dream ever, let alone be lucid. i have tried every technique known to mankind. anything you can think of i have tried! reality tests..MILD...meditation

I thought it was the medication I am on for a long time. I am on Serequel (neuroleptic) and sodium valporate. I also thought its because I have short term memory problems. Now I am wondering:

Am I unable to remember or be aware of my dreams because I am unable to remember or be aware of my waking life?

i feel like i am asleep when i am awake. if you asked me what i did this week i cant remember a single thinkg. i can tell you i have been to work during the week and went down to the beach on the weekend but that is because i do that every week. i cant think of a single conversation i had with anyone, or any specifics.

ive tried so hard to be aware more while i am awake but its so hard for me. maybe once a day i stop and become aware but i am usually so wrapped up in myself and my negative thoughts that i cant pull myself out of.

that sounds like your problem. if you can't remember something that you were conscious for the day before how do you expect to remember something that took place in the subconscious? -- did you have this short term memory loss as a kid?

Depression can alter your memory dramatically. And it does sound like this coulds be an issue for you. Because depression or anxiety can be resolved then so to can your awareness and memory. If this is the case.
On occasions where you have so many negetive thoughts that tend to repeat themselve on a consistant manner they will interfere with your thought process and your brain disregaurds the wrong information, like what you did last week or yesterday.
I do not want you to get the impression that I feel this is a result of your behavior, but drugs and alcohol can also deminish memory. -Just info.

Could be the medicine. That must really suck! I don't know what I would do without my dream life

I also used to have a lot of lucid dreams without knowing it (I think...).
I went through a phase where I never remembered ANY dreams, and that was during a time where I was on some kinda medication (I forget what for).
Recently I have dreams every night but never any LDs, hell I can rarely even control my own actions in my dreams these days.

Hope we can both learn to have LDs again.

I'm sorry to hear that. But, you already have so much practice as a young kid, I'm sure you can pick it up again. Any skill that's been unused for a long time, is always easily retrievable in the future, even if it takes some additional conditioning.

If I had the memory that you have, I wouldn't focus on lucid dreaming as much as you do, but instead focus my energy on trying to fix my memory.

thanks guys for replying i lost most of memory around 2001 due to electric shock therapy and/or dissociative drugs (great combination )

im trying really hard. i know in my heart that i cant start to dream again till i combat my negativity and am able to cope with the "real world" first. im trying to combat every negative thought with a positive one but when you subconcious is so obssesed with negativity its hard for it to not shrug off affirmations.

i obviously havent tried *everything*. at this point in time im doing reality checks..and i have a book next to my bed in case i remember anything.

about two months ago i went off my med (for other reasons). i dreamt! not lucid, or even vivid...but i remembered my dreams..
unfortunatly by day three i was planning suicide so I had to go back on them.

people have told me to use either relaxation or visualisation before bed. i can do neither! ive been trying both for over a year and gave up

any suggestions for a method of remembering dreams or having lucid dreams that doesnt involve visualising something, remembering something or concentrating on something?

Some how when I read your post I had not seen this portion of your statement.
I also am on Serequel. So you are not alone. I still am able to Lucid dream and have fairly good recall. So there could be hope for you in regards to the medication. I guess there are a lot a variables too. Depends on how each person reacts to it and how much & when.

It might not be easy, but it is important for you to know that it may be possible...I hope that you can somehow find a way that will help you.

You say you have tried every method, how's WILD for you? I know that if its hard for you to remember waking life then dream will be though too, but the fact that you are going in conscious, and leaving conscious too might give you an edge...

Electric shock and shock treatments. Are we talking about the same thing?

I have never heard of that method, (Shock treatments). ever having a possitive effect!
My mother had three sessions of shock treatments and the third time she was unaware of who her family members were. It took a long time for her to recover. And it never was a full recovery in my view.

Try waking yourself up in the middle of the night at odd hours, especially in 90 minute intervals. If that doesn't work, maybe you're not getting enough REM sleep and should consider going to a sleep clinic.
