      Lucid During a Nap?

I was talking to a guy about two years ago who said he experienced most of his lucid dreams in mid day naps... not only did I question as to how he could reach REM sleep, but also as to whether or not he was as lazy as I thought he was! lol who can nap everyday?!

ANYWAY, the question is: Does attempting to ld during a nap increase your chances of lucidity? Or is it even possible?

My logic points to it being easier because you are going straight from consciousness to sleep but I'm not quite sure if that is backed up in any way... just a hypothesis I guess...

      Help?

It is possible. But no different from a WILD, if he goes from waking-dream directly.

What time of day do you take your naps? Or does it not make a difference?

I don't know when, and I doubt it makes much difference.
I asked Jonesn (He's a polysomnologist (sleep technologist)) about REM in naps. Maby you'll be interested.

Q:About naps, is it true that you skip all the sleep stages and go directly to REM? Or is this just a mistake made by associating REM with dreams, which can also happen douring non-REM sleep (right?).

A:If you're taking a real nap, as in you have already slept a normal period of time prior to that nap, then your body/mind does not require you to run through the traditional sleep architecture wherein you must have Stage 2 and Delta sleep prior to REM.

Think about when you sleep in on a Sunday or whenever and you get more than 8 hours of sleep. Past that time you can really only have Stage 1 (very light sleep) or REM, though these dreams usually don't last as long or as stable as those you would have during REM-5 (the last 90min of a regular sleep cycle).

Sorry DeadDollKitty, but Bonsay's response kicked yours out of the water!

That's what I was looking for and that helps tremendously. Thanks!

I had my first lucid dream in an afternoon nap.

The only reason I can see that it might be easier in a nap is if you don't often take naps, therefore showing intent to your subconscious.

I have lucid dreams a lot when sleeping at night but if I nap in the day I never have them. I dream but its rubbish, just a hotch potch of images mainly and usually really strange.

      Hey there,

Actually, I think the reason why naps are often succesful is simply that your sleep is much lighter!

There is a definately link between lucidity and how deeply you sleep, which is why it's generally harder to have lucid dreams when you're completely exhausted, or during the first few hours of sleep (when you're in real deep sleep). Basically, it seems like the deeper we sleep, the more our consciousness gets deactivated.

Now when you nap, you're sleep in a period outside your rythme, and you know you're napping, and not going into full sleep. That causes you to sleep lighter (you will generally wake up from napping a lot easier as well, say when disturbed by a noise or another person or something).

Indeed Mr Red - I cannot LD if I am shattered, and my technique explains to people to have regular sleep patters, dont get too exhausted before bed and your sleep will be lighter thus resulting in increased dream recall, vividness and the ability to LD.

Plus we do dream outside REM sleep too; so in answer you can dream in naps.

Do a simple search on google with the terms: "NREM dreams".

That'll give you a good start for sure

I've heard lots of reports of people having LD's during naps, certainly. As some others said above, it has to do with your intentions...you lay down in bed, thinking, "I'm doing this, solely to lucid dream", and that may just be the kick in the ass, so to speak, your subconcious needs for some more of those gold LDs .

Logically, yes, you do sleep lighter, and up to a certain point I think will go into REM sleep after of course entering SP again.

I think I remember hearing that after a certain time it will be more like your going to bed early than napping and you'll go into deep sleep, so I'd keep it rather close to your regular wakeup time, say 2 or 3 hours (if that's possible).

Another thing is: Make sure to get lots of sleep, so you'll get more lighter sleep, and more chance for lucid dreams.

Good luck, I'm sure you'll succeed with a WILD soon, just play around and see what works for you.

Well I tried last night and I was up for an hour and a half... I never got as close as I did the first time...

I did, however, finally get some sick dream recall of a regular dream where I was a member of a secret organization investigating a branch of the NAVY but it turned out that the branch I was investigating was actually a fake branch from a terrorist organization and they set up their branch in order to investigate me... two of my companions died and my commander had this giant telephone that looked like a tower speaker and it had so many buttons all up and down the side of it and he listened to it by putting his head on top of it and pushing all the buttons...

So at least that's good lol

But yeah. Like you said, bro, I think I gotta stop trying so hard to WILD and just get regular sleep for a couple of days and maybe try to WILD just like one night a week. In the meantime, I think it would be wise to work on my recall and noticing more dreamsigns... like me killing my partner with a metal bastard file... or a giant telephone... I can't believe I didn't catch those! lol

Becoming Lucid during a nap is what lucid research suggest will probably yield you the best results, in mid-day, or morning...trying to go lucid at night without any sleep prior to your attempt is like trying to run a 4 flat with 5 inch platform shoes. In other worlds...it's possible to LD at night but the "difficulty" factor is raised exponentially.
